Use the Force…or don’t. A lightsaber can be an unwieldy and downright dangerous weapon to a non-Force user. Nevertheless, here are 6 non-Force users in Star Wars Canon who take their chances and wield the vibrant, plasma-bladed weapon of the Jedi and the Sith.

1. Cad Bane

Generally favoring his twin LL-30 blaster pistols, Clone Wars era bounty hunter Cad Bane briefly acquires and wields Jedi Quinlan Vos’ lightsaber during a skirmish with Obi-Wan Kenobi and Quinlan Vos. Kenobi quickly disarms the bounty hunter. Ultimately, Cad Bane escapes and Quinlan Vos recovers his lightsaber.

2. General Grievous

General Grievous, a Kaleesh cyborg, serves as the Supreme Commander of the Separatist Droid Army during the Clone Wars era. Trained in lightsaber combat by the Sith Lord Darth Tyrannus (Count Dooku), Grievous commonly wields two to four lightsabers at a time during combat. All of Grievous’ lightsabers trace their origins to fallen Jedi. Grievous, an avid hunter and killer of Jedi, recovers lightsabers from his enemies as war trophies.

3. Pre Vizsla

Pre Vizsla, the leader of the Mandalorian terrorist group, Death Watch, wields an an ancient black-bladed lightsaber called Darksaber during the Clone Wars era. Darth Maul eventually duels and kills Pre Vizsla in lightsaber combat, ultimately taking the Darksaber from the Mandalorian leader.

4. Han Solo

Han Solo may dismissively deem the lightsaber an ‘ancient weapon’, nevertheless the smuggler briefly uses one to save Luke Skywalker’s life in The Empire Strikes Back. After finding Luke Skywalker in a cold, weakened and delirious state during a Hoth blizzard, Solo borrows Luke’s lightsaber to slice open a dead tauntaun. “This may smell bad, kid,” Solo says, “but it’ll keep you warm.” He shoves a nearly unconscious Luke inside the carcass.

5. Finn

Finn, a stormtrooper-turned-Resistance-fighter, energetically wields the Skywalker lightsaber against stormtroopers and later Kylo Ren in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. After temperamental Kylo Ren defeats Finn in lightsaber combat, Rey recovers the lightsaber and confronts and fights Ren herself.

6. Jar Jar Binks

Darth Jar Jar fan theories aside, Jar Jar Binks legitimately, albeit briefly, wields a lightsaber in the comic Star Wars: Age of Republic Special #1. The Gungan cleanly slices through two battle droids with a lightsaber, unexpectedly aiding an imperiled Captain Rex. Jar Jar had found and recovered the lightsaber from the Laan Tik, a Jedi who had been killed in battle. Immediately following Jar Jar’s heroic moment, the hapless Gungan characteristically fumbles the still ignited lightsaber, exclaiming, “Ooo, eesa muy slipidy.” Rex then confiscates the lightsaber from Jar Jar in order to prevent the Gungan from accidentally hurting himself or others.
