Are Hasbro Star Wars Force FX lightsabers toys?

Are Star Wars Hasbro Force FX Lightsabers toys? That’s a good question. When I think of the company, Hasbro, the first thing that comes to mind is a toy–maybe an action figure or some kind of car.

Hasbro, nevertheless, does produce higher-end lightsabers equipped with metal hilts. Hasbro Star Wars: The Black Series Force FX Lightsabers often range in price from around $100 to $200 new, depending on where you buy them. The price alone is a bit higher than what many people would associates with toys.

But what exactly is a toy, anyway? If we define ‘toy’ as a plaything intended for children, then Force FX lightsabers might be a bit pricey. Still, we don’t know how many children, teens or adults own Force FX lightsabers or receive them as gifts.

If we read the box for this Rey (Jedi Training) Force FX lightsaber, the box refers to the item as an ‘Adult Collectible’. Hasbro is strongly implying or even asserting that the Force FX lightsaber is NOT a toy by calling it a collectible. Calling the Force FX lightsaber a ‘collectible’ also de-emphasizing the dueling ability of the lightsaber. Force FX lightsabers are NOT duel worthy. You could maybe do some very light dueling, but since the blade is permanently attached to the hilt and LEDs contained in the blade itself, the lightsaber cannot withstand heavy impact.

What do you think? Are Star Wars Force FX lightsabers toys, collectibles, both or neither? Does the price affect your opinion?
