Rare Jedi Species: 14 Jedi Who Are The Only One of Their Kind

In Star Wars, Jedi come from a wide variety of planets, backgrounds and species from around the galaxy. Even during the most prosperous eras of the Jedi Order, only a rare percentage of galactic citizens serve as Jedi Knights. Rarer still, some individuals who train as Jedi are the only known Jedi of their entire species. These are the rarest of the rare Jedi in the galaxy. Here are their stories.

1. Foul Moudama, Talz Jedi Master

First Appearance: animated series Star Wars: Clone Wars (2005)

Talz Jedi Master Foul Moudama serves the Jedi Order during the tumultuous Clone Wars era. Members of the Talz species have thick white fur and claws designed for icy, snowy and freezing condition. Talz also have four eyes: two day vision eyes and two night vision eyes.

At one point during the Clone Wars, Separatist General Grievous launches a surprise attack. Grand Master Yoda commands Moudama, along with several other experienced Jedi, to reinforce Chancellor Palpatine’s security detail. When the Jedi attempt to relocate the Chancellor to a secure location, Grevious locates the group and eventually outmatches Moudama and the rest of the Jedi. As a result, Moudama becomes another sad casualty of war and Grievious adds Moudama’s lightsaber to his infamous collection of lightsabers taken from fallen Jedi. The General also ultimately kidnaps Chancellor Palpatine as planned.

Foul Moudama also has the intriguing distinction of being one of the few, if not only, Jedi named after a real-world food item of the same name! The food item is a stewed fava bean dish that’s popular in the Middle East. A member of the Talz species named Muftak appears in the Mos Eisley cantina scene in Star Wars: A New Hope (1977).

2. Tabakan Pak, Dug Jedi Master

First Appearance: comic book The High Republic Adventures 12 (2022)

Dug Jedi Master Tabakan Pak serves the Jedi Order during the High Republic era. He takes on Qort as his apprentice, training him until Qort ascends to the rank of Jedi Knight.

The Dug species originate from Malastare, a forested Mid Rim planet. Dug individuals have long snouts and use their hands as feet and legs as arms. Sebulba, Anakin Skywalker’s scheming podracing adversary in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, is the first Dug to appear in the Star Wars franchise.

3. Beldorion the Hutt, Jedi Knight

The only known Hutt Jedi is named Beldorion. Beldorion learns the ways of the Force and serves the Jedi Order and the Galactic Republic around the time of 400 BBY. The Jedi Council dispatches Beldorion and human female Jedi Knight Taselda on a mission of the planet Nam Churios. During the mission, the Hutt Jedi falls to the dark side, abandons the Jedi Order and becomes the self appointed ruler of the planet. Many years later, the former Jedi captures Leia Organa Solo and takes her prisoner. She eventually escapes and defeats Beldorion in a lightsaber duel.

The infamous crime lord Jabba the Hutt is the first Hutt to appear in Star Wars in the film Return of the Jedi. The slug-like Hutt species originate from Nal Hutta, a hot and humid swamp planet in the Outer Rim Territories. Hutts are capable of living for 1000 years or more.

4. Unidentified Ewok Jedi

First Appearance: Geonosis and the Outer Rim Worlds (2004), a sourcebook for the Star Wars Roleplaying Game

The only known Ewok Jedi is so mysterious that we don’t even know their name. First seen in Return of the Jedi, Ewoks live a tribal hunter-gatherer lifestyle with a culture centered around the worship or nature.

The unidentified Ewok Jedi serves the New Jedi Order at some point after the fall of the Empire and Luke Skywalker’s establishment of the New Jedi Order. The Jedi, who wears blue Jedi robes and wields a blue lightsaber, intervenes to prevent a group of Sanyassans from enslaving a fellow Ewok.

5. Jak’zin, Togorian Jedi Knight

First Appearance: comic book Age of the New Republic – Count Dooku 1 (2019)

During the waning years of the Republic Jak’zin, a male Togorian, trains as a Jedi eventually ascending to the rank of Jedi Knight within the Jedi Order. Togorians are a sentient feline species with thick fur and retractable claws. While fur color and eye color varies among Togorian individuals varies, Jak’zin resembles a real-world tiger!

During a mission to the planet Sullust, Jak’zin coincidentally encounters Count Dooku, a former Jedi who had left the Order. Dooku initially helps Jak’zin on his mission, even fighting alongside the Jedi…with a red lightsaber. After the battle the former Jedi ultimately reveals he has become a Sith Lord. Dooku uses the Force to shoot Jak-zin in the back, killing the feline Jedi Knight.

6. Ikrit, Kushiban Jedi Master

First Appearance: young adult novel Junior Jedi Knights: The Golden Globe (1995)

Ikrit is a male Kushiban Jedi Master who is trained by Yoda himself. A member of the Kushiban species, Ikrit has big, floppy ears, four paws with claws, and a long, soft tail. Cover in soft fur, Ikrit looks a bit like an adorable bunny rabbit/cat hybrid. Ikrit goes into self-imposed exile on the moon Yavin 4 after failing to free the souls of children trapped in the Massassi Temple there. During his exile, he waits for someone else to arrive help free the souls of the children.

Hundreds of years later, young Anakin Solo and Tahiri Veila find Ikrit. They work together and free the souls of the children. Only then does Ikrit reveal that he is in fact a Jedi Master. Ikrit sacrifices himself during the Yuuzhan Vong War in order to help Anakin Solo and Tahiri Veila escape.

7. Oppo Rancisis, Thisspiasian Jedi Council Member

First Appearance: Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999)

Jedi Master Oppo Rancisis serves on the Jedi Council from the High Republic era to the the tumultuous Clone Wars era. He is a Thisspiasian, a species with a snake-like body and thick beards and hair on their heads. Along with Yoda, Rancisis is considered one of the oldest and wisest Council members of the era.

A brilliant strategist and tactician, Rancisis general prefers using other Force abilities, including powerful Battle Meditation, over wielding his green lightsaber in battle. Nonetheless, the Jedi Master maintains strong and effective lightsaber combat skills and hand-to-hand combat skills as well. He survives Great Jedi Purge and manages to effectively hide from the Empire for many years.

The creators of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series developed a curved-hilt lightsaber for the legendary Jedi Master. Due to the abrupt cancellation of the series in 2014, the lightsaber never appears onscreen, however. Concept art of the Dooku-inspired hilt remains.

8. Akial, Jawa Jedi

First Appearance: Paarty On! roleplaying-game adventure (2003)

During the waning years of the Galactic Republic, Akial trains as a Jedi. Instead of conventionally learning the ways of the Force at the Jedi Temple Coruscant, Akial takes a different path. He trains at the unorthodox Almas Academy in the Cularin system. He trains as a Jedi Consular, focusing on a Jedi school of thought emphasizing diplomacy and peace over combat. Akial ascends to the rank of Jedi Knight during the Clone Wars. During a Jedi recruiting event, Akial debates a fellow Jedi on the threat level of the Metatheran Cartel and a nearby Sith cult referred to the Believers.

The Jawa species originate on Tatooine, a remote desert planet in the Outer Rim Territories. They have bright eyes that are yellow, orange or red and commonly wear thick hooded robes. Jawas first appear in Star Wars A New Hope (1977) as scavengers.

9. Voolvif Monn, Shistavanen Jedi Master

First Appearance: animated series Star Wars: Clone Wars (2002)

Voolvif Monn attains the rank of Jedi Master around the time of the Clone Wars. Monn is a Shistavanen, a werewolf-like species from the Outer Rim Territories planet Uvena Prime. He wields a green lightsaber and serves as a Jedi General during the war for the Jedi Order and the Republic. Monn is one of the few surviving members of the Jedi strike team tasked with rescuing Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Padme Amidala from Geonosis. He fights in several additional Clone Wars battles as well.

Initially growing up in solitude, Voolvif Monn develops sharp tracking and hunting skills from a young age prior to his Jedi training. He continues to enjoy solitude into his adulthood and rarely speaks unless necessary.

Voolvif Monn takes direct inspiration from the “Wolfman” Lak Sivrak in the Mos Eisley cantina scene in Star Wars A New Hope (1977).

10. Kina Ha, Kaminoan Jedi Master

First Appearance: novel Imperial Commando: 501st (2009)

Kina Ha is born on the aquatic planet Kamino during the Republic Classic era, a peaceful age prior to the fall of the Republic. Despite being genetically altered to survive deep-space missions, she is never summoned to carry out a mission. Her Force-sensitivity reveals itself as she feels increasingly disillusioned with her society. She leaves her homeworld, fearing “reeducation”. Kras-dohk, a rogue Jedi Master, trains her as his apprentice. After his death she only maintains very loose ties with the Jedi Council.

Around the time of the Clone Wars, Ha experiences a disturbing Force vision of dark side soldiers originating from Kamino. The clone army, however, does no match the dark presence in her vision. She is unaware of Order 66, the secret command programmed into the clones to kill the Jedi.

Kina Ha manages to survive the enactment of Order 66 and the ensuing Jedi Purge. She and a few other Jedi survivors eventually takes refuge on the planet Mandalore for awhile.

11. OrbaLin, Ugor Jedi Master

First Appearance: comic book issue Star Wars The High Republic 4 (2021)

OrbaLin trains as a Jedi during the High Republic. OrbaLin is a member of the Ugor species, a green blob-like species. He wears a specialized environmental suit in order to project and utilize a humanoid form. OrbaLin ascends to the rank of Jedi Master and becomes the Jedi Archivist of the Starlight Beacon, the ill-fated Republic space station.

OrbaLin attends the Republic Fair on Valo, a planet in the Outer Rim. When Twi’lik marauder Lourna Dee and her gang attack, OrbanLin ignites his green lightsaber and fights them. At the same time, he lectures the group about artifacts all the while throwing the artifacts at them during the battle. Although he wins the battle, Lourna Dee eventually strikes him down in revenge.

12. Nubs, Pooba Jedi Initiate

First Appearance: animated series Young Jedi Adventures (2023)

The lovable and cuddly Nubs explores the galaxy and helps individuals along the way all while training as a Jedi Initiate. A member of the bear-like Pooba species, Nubs has blue fur, blue eyes and large ears. He trains alongside his friends Kai Brightstar and Lys Solay during the High Republic era.

Disney developed the Pooba species specifically for the Young Jedi Adventures, an animated series geared for young viewers, in 2023.

13. Verpine Jedi Master Beyghor Sahdett

First Appearance: comic book Star Wars Republic #79: Into the Unknown, Part 1 (2005)

Jedi Master Beyghor Sahdett serves the Jedi Order during the final years of the Galactic Republic. A member of the Verpine species, Sahdett is a green insectioid biped with big eyes and two antennae.

During the initial stages of the Great Jedi Purge, the newly formed Empire capture Sahdett along with four other Jedi. Emperor Palpatine returns the lightsabers to the Jedi and commands them to fight each other to the death. When all five Jedi turn to fight Palpatine instead, the Sith Lord quickly dispatches three Jedi leaving Sahdett and one other Jedi. Sadhett turns and kills the other Jedi. He becomes an undercover Jedi hunter for the Emperor.

Posing as a fellow Jedi survivor, Sahdett finds Jedi Kai Hudorra and Jedi Dass Jennir. Sensing the fallen Jedi’s true loyalty to the Emperor, the two Jedi engage in a lightsaber duel with him. The two Jedi defeat him and tie him up. When Darth Vader finds him, Sahdett reveals to Vader that he is an agent of the Emperor. This does not save him, however. Vader strikes him down with a stroke of his lightsaber.

14. Vergere, Fosh Jedi Knight

First Appearance: novel Rogue Planet (2000)

Vergere ascends to the rank of Jedi Knight during the final years of the Republic. She is a member of the bird-like Fosh species from a unknown planet. Vergere mysteriously disappears in 30 BBY. Unbeknownst to the Jedi, she discovers the Yuuzhan Vong, a species that originates from outside of the known galaxy. She secretly lives with them and learns from them for many years.

During the initial stages of the Yuuzhan Vong invasion, she tortures Jacen Solo while he is in the custody of the Yuuzhan Vong. Secretly now a Sith, she wishes to turn Solo into her Sith apprentice. Vergere later returns to the light side and sacrifices herself during battle to save Jacen Solo’s life in 28 ABY. Solo later falls to the dark side and becomes Darth Caedus.

Additional Individuals Who Are The Only Known Jedi of Their Species

Sar Agorn, a male Jedi Master, serves the Jedi Order during the early years of the Galactic Republic. An unidentified species, he has a blob-like appearance surrounded by green gas. He keeps a personal holocron filled with his knowledge and Jedi philosophy that is recovered many years later.

Nem Bees is a male Ortolan Jedi Knight during the Clone Wars. The Jedi Council sends him undercover to his homeworld, Orto, in order to foils Separatist plots. Blue and elephant-like in appearance, Bees is the same species as musician Max Rebo in Return of the Jedi.

Omo Bouri is a male Wol Cabasshite Jedi Master with a leech-like appearance who trains Clone Wars era Jedi Council Member Saesee Tiin in Star Wars Legends.

Dorsk 81 is a male Khommite clone. A member of a humanoid species of clone, he is among the founding class of students at Luke Skywalker’s Jedi Praxium. He sacrifices himself to thwart Imperial Remnant Admiral Daala’s plot to destroy the Jedi Academy.

Nubarron serves on the Starlight Beacon space station during the High Republic era. The Jedi Master is an unidentified species resembling a cloud. They are capable color shifting, generating lightning, and even wielding a lightsaber.

An Unidentified Pau’an male Jedi Knight serves as a Jedi Temple Guard during the Clone Wars. In the aftermath of the Clone Wars, he turns to the dark side and adopts the notorious title The Grand Inquisitor. He leads of group of Jedi hunters tasked with capturing or killing any straggler Jedi survivors of the Great Jedi Purge.

Barash Silvain is a female Kage Jedi Master during the High Republic era. As a Jedi youngling she meets Port Engle and the two come to regard each other as sibling.

Thon is a male Tchuukthai Jedi Master who exists during the time of the Great Sith War. He is part of a large, reptilian species with natural armor plating on his body. He trains Nomi Sunrider and Vima Sunrider as Jedi.

Treetower is a male Ugnaught Jedi Master who serves the Jedi Order and the Republic during the Clone Wars. He successfully rescues a group of Ugnaughts enroute to a Confederate factory where they would have become enslaved labor.

Astaal Vilbum is a male Baragwin. As Jedi Master during the waning years of the Republic, he is appointed the title Caretake of First Knowledge. The role requires overseeing the ciriculum at the Jedi Academy as well as protecting the knowledge of the Jedi Archives and Holocron Vaults.
