Jedi Robes: A Guide to Traditional Jedi Clothing
Jedi robes are a set of traditional, loose-fitting clothing worn by Jedi. The unassuming, monk-like clothing items are often tan or brown in color. Although many Jedi elect to wear traditional Jedi robes, the Jedi Order does not mandate a specific dress code. Some Jedi, like Aayla Secura, eschew traditional Jedi robes and wear different clothing instead.

Real Life Jedi Robes
While some Star Wars fans opt to create their own Jedi robes, many fans purchase some or all of the Jedi costume. Three companies that offer officially licensed Jedi costumes include: Rubies (low end, Halloween costumes), Anovos (high end Jedi costumes), and Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge and the Shop Disney website (midrange).
Numerous fan-made, custom Jedi robes options are available as well, especially on Etsy. Fan-made Jedi robes run the gamut in price and quality, ranging from low end to high end and tailor made.
NOTE: If you plan to join the Rebel Legion costuming organization, read their Jedi Costume Standards (Generic) before purchasing any Jedi robes, clothing, or footwear.
Typical Jedi Robes in Star Wars Canon
A typical Jedi robe features a deep hood and wide sleeves. A typical ensemble of Jedi clothing includes: an undertunic, overtunic, and a tabard tucked into a wide sash (obi) worn around the waist. A leather Jedi belt attaches over the sash. Finally, tall, sturdy Jedi boots complete the look.
Jedi robes and clothing are commonly warm earth tones like brown or tan. Some Jedi wear cool earth tones like gray, sand blue or sand green. Anakin Skywalker wears darker robes than most Jedi of his era.
The entire Jedi robe ensemble optimizes the wearer’s comfort and range of motion. Much like a Jedi’s lightsaber, a Jedi’s clothing may be customized to reflect the wearer’s preferences and personality. Jedi may remove the loose-fitting outer robe during lightsaber combat.
Jedi Robes After Order 66
Following Palpatine’s enactment of Order 66 and start of the Great Jedi Purge, the few surviving Jedi scatter across the galaxy. Many survivors become fugitives and adopt a new identity or way of life. In order to avoid attracting undue Imperial attention, some Jedi survivors, including Cal Kestis and Kanan Jarrus, avoid openly wearing a lightsaber or wearing traditional Jedi robes.
Why Obi-Wan Kenobi Wears Jedi Robes on Tatooine
Although some Jedi fugitives discard their Jedi robes to keep a low profile, Obi-Wan Kenobi does not. Although the Jedi changes his first name to Ben, Kenobi continues wearing traditional Jedi robes during his self-imposed exile on Tatooine. On Tatooine, tunics and robes are common attire due to the planet’s harsh desert climate. In the case of Kenobi, at least, his Jedi robes may actually help him keep a lower profile and blend in with his surroundings.
Behind the Scenes
Jedi robes first appear in the film Star Wars: A New Hope (1977). Ben Kenobi wears the traditional Jedi garb throughout the film.
