In a galaxy of MANY unusual lightsaber designs, LEGO Darth Maul’s crazy eight-bladed lightsaber is arguably one of strangest. The Sith Lord gleefully wields the excessively-bladed lightsaber in a scene in LEGO Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Out, a 22-minute television special that originally aired on Cartoon Network in 2012. Darth Maul normally wields a double-bladed lightsaber with only one blade protruding from each end of the hilt.

In the scene, LEGO Darth Maul first extends two lightsaber blades while quietly singing “Darth Maul…awesome!”. Maul sings the line in parallel to the melody of the Duel of the Fates instrumental music (i.e. ‘Darth Maul theme’) from Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. As the music and Maul’s singing continues, SIX additional lightsaber blades sprout out of the hilt. In total, four lightsaber blades fan out from each end of LEGO Darth Maul’s lightsaber hilt.

There is no official name for the eight-bladed lightsaber. Wookiepedia informally refers to the lightsaber as an ‘Octo-bladed lightsaber‘. Since the eight-bladed lightsaber was almost certainly developed as a sight gag for LEGO Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Out, don’t expect an eight-bladed lightsaber to join Star Wars Canon any time soon.
