What is a training lightsaber? (Lightsaber Terminology)

A training lightsaber, which is also sometimes called a Youngling lightsaber, is lightsaber calibrated to a less powerful and dangerous setting in order to minimize the occurrence of injury and facilitate safer lightsaber practice. A standard lightsaber could be adjusted for use as a training lightsaber.

Jedi Younglings, who are children training in the ways of the Force, commonly practice with training lightsabers. The Jedi Order provides training lightsabers to Jedi Younglings before the initiates undergo “The Gathering”, which is a rite of passage requiring each Jedi Youngling to harvest a kyber crystal from the remote planet Ilum. The Youngling later uses the harvested crystal to build their own lightsaber.

Training lightsabers were first depicted in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002). In the film, Yoda is shown briefly instructing a group of Jedi Younglings who are wielding training lightsabers.

Custom Youngling Lightsabers
Several custom saber companies sell ‘real’ versions of a so-called Youngling lightsaber. A custom Youngling lightsaber is typically a budget-friendly, low-end custom sound saber with a metal hilt and plastic blade. Custom Youngling lightsabers are typically NOT DUEL worthy (light contact may be possible for some models). Saberforge Youngling Sabers are a particularly famous and popular product line.
