What is a saber builder? (Lightsaber Terminology)

A saber builder is a type of lightsaber modeling software that allows a user to digitally build a realistic computer model of a custom lightsaber. Two of the biggest saber builder programs are Saber Parts (by Saberforge) and MHS Builder (by The Custom Saber Shop. The now defunct Hampton’s Handcrafted LED Sabers (HHCLS) had also developed a 3D saber builder for its OTS line of lightsaber parts.

A saber builder program only draws on lightsaber parts that are manufactured by their respective company (e.g. Saber Parts only uses Saberforge pieces and MHS Builder only uses The Custom Saber Shop pieces).

A saber builder empowers the user to combine modular parts on screen in order to get an idea what the hilt would look like in real life. The user can assess how buttons will align, components may clash in color or design, and ultimately how much the user likes the overall look of the custom hilt.

A benefit of a saber builder is the program allows a user to digitally assemble HUNDREDS of combinations of custom lightsabers before buying, even if the lightsaber enthusiasts is unable or unwilling to purchase ultimately purchase a lightsaber. Some lightsaber enthusiasts intentionally configure strange or unusual combinations of parts just for the fun of creating a strange design and sharing it with other Star Wars fans and lightsaber enthusiasts.

The Custom Saber Shop, one of the largest custom lightsaber parts sellers in the world, developed a saber builder program called MHS Builder. Modular Hilt System (MHS) is a system of mix and match modular lightsaber components created by The Custom Saber Shop.

MHS Builder is a 3D program with an cutaway view option, parts list, and ‘Add to Cart’ feature. The ‘Preview’ mode enables the user to manipulate the hilt on a 3D plane. The MHS Builder currently primarily features MHS V1 parts, although the company plans to add additional MHS V2 parts to the program in the future.

The MHS Builder program offers parts selections including: Blade Holders, Adapters, Extensions, Pommels, Chokes and Main Bodies.

Saberforge, one of the largest custom saber companies in the world, developed their own 3D saber builder called Saber Parts following the release of the Saberforge Adaptive Saber Parts (ASP) line. The ASP line is a modular system of mix and match lightsaber components first launched by Saberforge in 2015.

The 3D virtual environment allows the user to rotate the parts and the perspective. Saber Parts also include a fun ‘Random Saber’ option that combines random components together. Saber Parts provides the user with a parts list and an ‘Email List’ option, however, the program DOES NOT offer an ‘Add to Cart’ feature.

The Saber Parts program offers parts selections including: Emitters, Switch Sections, Bodies, Pommels, Blades, Couplers, Chambers, Extensions, Blade Plugs, Light and Sound.
