At Savi’s Workshop, guests assemble their own personal, functional lightsaber on the spot during a build session. Savi’s Workshop lightsabers are comprised of a metal hilt, a kyber crystal and a detachable plastic blade. The lightsaber, which lights up and makes sound, costs around $200.

Now let’s take a detailed, step by step journey through the entire Savi’s Workshop lightsaber building experience. Disney cast members called The Gathers guide guests through the entire build session. Savi’s Workshop, at least initially, may accept lightsaber builders on an ‘appointment only’ basis.

Step 1: Select Your Lightsaber Theme
Guests choose one of four themed trays lightsaber parts: Elemental Nature (Bantha hide, Brylark wood, Cartusian whale bones and Rancor teeth), Peace and Justice (Jedi themed parts), Protection and Defense (Old Republic themed parts, including some copper and silver color parts), Power and Control (dark side themed parts). After selecting a theme, each guest is given an exclusive pin.

Step 2: Enter the Build Room
Guests, along with their themed tray, are next guided to the build room. Each guest get to use their own personal build station. One of The Gathers gives a brief introduction (i.e. “We as Gathers preserve our past in order to protect our future along with the knowledge of the Force to pass it on to future generations and to all of you today….”.

Step 3: Choose Your Kyber Crystal
A Gather introduces the kyber crystal as “our connection to the Force and the color of the crystal depicts the color of your blade to be.” Guests select one four kyber crystal colors: blue (Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, Rey), green (Qui-Gon Jinn, Ahsoka Tano, Luke Skywalker, Yoda), violet (Mace Windu), red (“crystal of power”, Darth Vader, Darth Maul, Asajj Ventress, Kylo Ren).

Step 4: A Gather Introduces the Lightsaber Components
A Gather identifies and introduces the types of lightsaber pieces including: the chassis, grips “to hold onto” (select 2 of 4 options), emitters pieces “for your blade to come out” (select 1 of 2 options) total), 2 pommel pieces “to house your power cell” (select 1 of 2 options), and activation plates “serve as your on/off switch to your saber” (select 2 of 4 options). The pieces slide over the chassis.

Step 5: Build Your Lightsaber
At long last, guests assemble their own lightsaber. Guests install the kyber crystal into the center of the chassis first. Next, guests screw on the pommel and emitter pieces. The wide end of each ‘brick’ should point toward the center of the chassis. Gathers recommend assembling one end at a time (i.e. the top section or the bottom section). Finally, guests attach the activation plates. The Gathers are available to answer questions and assist guests during the entire build process.

Step 6: Hilt Inspection
A Gatherer inspects the completed hilt to make sure it’s assembled correctly and the pieces are screwed in tight.

Step 7: Gathers Place Hilts in Crystal Stabilization Chamber
Guests are instructed to stand back as “Gatherers are coming around and placing your hilts in the crystal stablization chamber.” The ‘crystal stabilization chamber’, which is located at each guest’s build station, extends from one end of the build station to the other. (Yes, the crystal stabilization chamber’ is approximately the length of a lightsaber blade!). Yoda’s voice plays overhead, talking telling guests that all of the parts are now joined together to construct the lightsaber.

Step 8: Lightsaber Activation
“Builders, the time has come for us to complete the bond from builder to saber,” a Gatherer says. Guest are instructed to step forward and activate their hilts together. All of the lightsabers around the room illuminate inside the crystal stabilization chamber. Guest are now instructed to raise their lightsabers. “You have just built a lightsaber,” a Gather says, “just like the Jedi and Sith who have come before you and like them, you too, can change the galaxy.”

Step 8: Deactivation and Exit
Finally guests are instructed to deactivate their lightsabers. Yoda’s voice plays overhead, saying, “Hmm, complete your lightsaber is. Choose your path, it cannot, but you way, it can. May the Force be with you.” Guests exit Savi’s Workshop with their newly completed lightsabers in-hand.
