What is a chassis? (Lightsaber Terminology)

A lightsaber chassis is a protective structure that encases part or all of the internal lightsaber components and electronics. Sabertrio uses a protective chassis for the battery packs on their stunt sabers. The chassis helps keep the battery pack locked in place so it doesn’t shift around and aggravate the wiring during dueling. The Sabertrio battery chassis securely attaches to the hilt with a screw. A screw near the pommel both attaches the Covertec wheel to the hilt and secures the battery pack inside the hilt, minimizing saber rattle during dueling, spinning or general lightsaber maneuvering.

Often made from plastic, a chassis is a nice safety feature to look for when you’re purchasing a lightsaber because it will minimize damage to the wiring and internals of the lightsaber, which could ultimately help lengthen the life of your lightsaber.

Many lightsaber chassis are 3D printed. Shapeways seller GOTH-3Designs [AFFILIATE LINK] is one of the largest and most well-known lightsaber chassis sellers. GOTH-3D offers a wide variety of 3D printed lightsaber chassis for various lightsaber hilt models. When you’re shopping around for a lightsaber chassis, you need to make sure to find one that’s compatible with you specific hilt model.

Not all lightsaber companies use a chassis on their sabers so if you’re shopping around, make sure to do your research in advance. If you’re not sure if a saber company uses a ligthsaber chassis, contact them before you make a purchase because sometimes it’s not always clear in the item description if the lightsaber uses a chassis.
