Star Wars The Black Series Kylo Ren Force FX lightsaber Hasbro full review

This is a Star Wars: The Black Series Kylo Ren Force FX lightsaber. The lightsaber is manufactured by Hasbro and is available from many major retailers and also online on eBay [affiliate link], Amazon [affiliate link] and elsewhere. One of the first things I noticed about this lightsaber is it’s very heavy! The Kylo Ren lightsaber weighs nearly 3 pounds without batteries. By comparison, the Star Wars: The Black Series Darth Vader Force FX lightsaber weighs just under 2 pounds without batteries.

The lightsaber might be a bit heavy for kids. The lightsaber hilt is also quite wide–about 2 inches in diameter. The blade portion of the lightsaber is about 32 inches long. The crossbar blades are about 5 inches long each. The hilt itself is about 11 inches long.

The hilt is metal, which is part of the reason why the lightsaber is so heavy. The coloring of the hilt is very dark–either a very dark gray or a light black. The hilt is weathered in spots around the lightsaber and features an exposed panel near the emitter where a decorative red wire runs down the side of the hilt to pommel area. Like the dark appearance of hilt, the lightsaber’s sound font features moody and crackly undertones.

The lightsaber runs on 3 AA batteries, which are not included with the lightsaber. To access the battery pack, you unscrew the pommel. The base of the Kylo Ren battery features decorative gray and black panels that are visible through the pommel area windows. The Kylo Ren Force FX battery pack is NOT compatible with other Force FX lightsabers.

If the lightsaber wasn’t labeled with a bright yellow ‘on/off’ sticker, finding the sliding switch to turn on the saber would be difficult. The sliding on/off switch is located near the top of the hilt between the lightsaber’s crossbars.

The Kylo Ren Force FX lightsaber, like the other lightsabers in The Black Series, uses a string blade (the LEDs are contained within the blade itself). The blades are permanently attached to the lightsaber, although some fans will convert the saber and add their own removable blade. The saber features the lightsaber scrolling effect when you turn the lightsaber on or off. The large, center blade illuminates first before the two crossbar blades.

Due of the weight and the large diameter of the lightsaber, it’s kind of a beast to swing around, even for an adult! The lightsaber is very fun, though, even though it’s larger and heavier than I was expecting.

Like all of the Star Wars: The Black Series Force FX lightsabers, the Kylo Ren lightsaber includes clear acrylic stand. The stand can hold the saber in multiple ways. If you’re considering purchasing a different stand for the saber, consider that not all lightsaber stands work well with crossguard sabers. Vertical lightsaber stands often display non-standard lightsabers, like crossguards, in an appealing way.

Many major retailers sell the Kylo Ren Force FX lightsaber. Websites like eBay and Amazon often sell the Kylo Ren Forc FX lightsaber for good prices, but the prices do fluctuate. I purchased my Kylo Ren lightsaber on eBay in February 2018.
