Stellan Gios in Star Wars Canon
The Stellan Gios crossguard lightsaber features a folding crossguard. When Jedi Master Stellan Gios is not using the lightsaber, the crossguard element folds up and extends forward. Gios wears the lightsaber on his hip using a lightsaber holster.
Stellan Gios studies the ways of the Force under the guidance of the Jedi Order. He becomes the apprentice of Jedi Master Rana Kant. During Gios’ time as a Padawan, he develops a close bond with fellow Padawans Avar Kriss and Elzar Mann. Stellan Gios ascends to the rank of Jedi Master. Gios takes on Vernestra Rwoh as an apprentice and mentors her until she is promoted to Jedi Knight. Strong in the Force, Gios is a natural teacher and an optimistic and well-respected member of the Jedi Order.
Behind the Scenes
The Stellan Gios lightsaber first appears in the reference book Star Wars: The Lightsaber Collection (2020). The lightsaber is the first crossguard lightsaber with a folding crosspiece. The Star Wars: The Lightsaber Collection book explains how the folding mechanism works, “When the saber ignites,” the book says, “the crossguard blades push the quillons outward forming caps to the blades and creating a secondary guard.”
Several additional High Republic era Jedi lightsabers, including the Burryaga Agaburry lightsaber, are crossguard lightsabers as well.
