Although Hasbro is withholding most of the details about the lightsaber prototype, Slash Film describes the new lightsaber as “utilizing bright light and fog emanating from a lightsaber handle” in order to make a more realistic blade that looks like it’s actually igniting out of the hilt. In 2018, Disney filed a patent for a new retractable lightsaber technology so it’s possible the lightsaber prototype that Hasbro showcased at Star Wars Celebration Chicago uses the patent pending technology.
Since the new type of lightsaber is only in the early stages of development, it’s unclear when, where or even IF Hasbro will release this new extendable lightsaber. Many Star Wars fans and lightsaber enthusiasts would like to see a lightsaber using a more realistic extendable/retractable blade. All of the existing Star Wars Force FX lightsabers and most custom lightsabers use a fixed, cylindrical lightsaber blade.
