What is a Photon Blade? (Lightsaber Terminology)

A Photon Blade is a style of lightsaber blade containing a green fluorescein dye that, when illuminated with a blue light, shines a bright and vibrant ‘radioactive’ green color. The resulting photon green color appears more vivid and complex than a standard green lightsaber blade.

A Photon Blade may serve as a day blade in bright environments, due to the both blade’s green color and the blade’s ability to appear bright even in direct sunlight.

Photonic Bladesmith, a lightsaber enthusiast on the FX-Sabers forums, developed the first Photon Blade, made of acrylic, in 2015. Later in 2015, the custom saber companies Vader’s Vault and The Custom Saber Shop teamed up to develop and release a polycarbonate version of the Photon Blade.

Photon Blades are currently only available in green. Although a Photon Blade pairs with any blue LED, Vader’s Vault recommends using a blue LED or a light blue LED.

Although a Photon Blade may also be used with a green LED or other LED colors, the Photon Blade only reacts to blue light. Consider that getting a Photon Blade is not a good fit for a lightsaber enthusiats that wants a blue lightsaber blade since the Photon Blade turns blue light into green.
