Hurrikaine Lightsaber Crystal in Star Wars Legends

The rare and mysterious hurrikaine lightsaber crystal originates from the similarly named planet, Hurikane. Hurikane is a rocky planet in Wild Space. An indigenous sentient rock species inhabits the planet.

In 58 BBY, a young Jedi Padawan Mace Windu is at the top of his class at the Jedi Temple. Still, the Padawan is struggling to construct the lightsaber that came to him in a Force vision. He asks the Jedi Council for a challenge to find the suitable crystal for his lightsaber. The Council sends Windu on his first solo mission to the planet Hurikane.

After Windu arrives on the rocky planet, indigenous sentient rock individuals chase the young Padawan. Although he manages to fend them off by using the Force, in the process he causes one of the individuals to shatter. Windu uses the Force to painstakingly heal the individual. As a show of appreciation, a Hurikanean presents Windu with a violet hurrikaine crystal. Windu successfully constructs a lightsaber to his liking using hurrikaine crystal. The Padawan’s lightsaber produces a distinctive purple blade.

Windu’s Guile (Hurrikaine Lightsaber Crystal Variant)

Windu’s Guile is a Hurrikaine crystal variant named after the legendary Jedi Council member Mace Windu. The crystals feature a polyhedral structure and come in various sizes–up the size of a fist. When utilized during lightsaber construction, Windu’s Guile produces a vibrant purple lightsaber blade.

During the Galactic Civil War, both Imperial-aligned and Alliance-aligned Force sensitive individuals utilize Windu’s Guile crystals in their respective lightsabers.

Behind the Scenes

The Hurrikaine lightsaber crystal first appears in Star Wars Legends in the story “Stones” in the comic book Star Wars Tales 13 (2002). “Stones” details a young Jedi Padawan Mace Windu’s search for a kyber crystal for his first lightsaber on the planet Hurikane.

The Hurrikaine crystal also appears in several videos games including: Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided (2003), Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: Sith Lords (2004), Star Wars: The Old Republic II: Onslaught (2019). Players using a cheat code may also unlock the crystal in the PS3 version of the video game Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (2008).

Hurrikaine crystal is likely named after a hurricane, a tropical storm characterized by strong winds and a spiral of thunderstorms.
