Every LEGO Star Wars Droid Set: The Ultimate Guide and List

Buildable LEGO Star Wars Droid sets capture the details of the galaxy’s most lovable, fearsome, stealthy and formidable droids. LEGO launched the first ever buildable droid, TECHNIC Pit Droid 8000, in 2000 during the early years of LEGO’s Star Wars licensing arrangement. After producing 7 TECHNIC style droids between 2000 and 2003, the toy company stops producing buildable droids.

Starting in 2012, after a 9 year hiatus, LEGO abandons TECHNIC style droid sets. Instead, the company begins emphasizing more of a sculpture and display piece approach to most LEGO Star Wars droid sets. Most of the droid sets from 2012 to the present include a display plaque, minifigure version of the character, and, in some cases, a buildable display stand. Although the sets emphasize display, they typically feature compartments and some moving components as well.

Let’s explore EVERY buildable LEGO Star Wars droid ever made by the toy company, ranging from multiple R2-D2s to BD-1 to droid TECHNIC sets. As of 2023, LEGO has released 15 droid sets.

Figure’s head spins around 360 degree, just like in the movies. Figure may stand its two back legs or deploy the third leg in the front. Push down a lever in the rear of the figure to deploy the droid’s tool arm. Since a series of gear cogs serve as wheels, you can roll Artoo across the floor as well.

Year: 2001

C-3PO features a mostly black and metallic gold color scheme. Some details include the character’s metallic silver leg and decorative blue and red hose pieces serving as wires in the torso section. Set is the first buildable droid to use sticker accents as well. Figure has movable arms and the head may tilt as well.

Aside from moving and posing the figure, you can press the piece in the center of the figure and the arms and head will detach from the droid’s body! 3. TECHNIC Destroyer Droid 8002

Year: 2000
Original MSRP: $50.00
Pieces: 567
Buy: https://ebay.us/jlvYBc

Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encounter a pair of Destroyer Droids at the beginning of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999). Destroyer Droids, also known as Droidekas, walk on three legs and fire twin blasters at opponents. The droids utilize a protective shield and may curl up and roll around in order to assume a new position during battle.

Like in the movie, the Technic Destroyer Droid is capable of curling up. You can actually roll the curled up droid across the floor. When it stops, the droid will uncurl and point its blasters out. Note that the droid doesn’t always uncurl 100% of the time. During the roll the droid must hit a lever in order to uncurl properly. The droid also displays well on on its three legs.

The buildable Battle Droid, a co-branded Technic set, stands 13.7 inches tall and features a mostly tan color scheme with some gray accents. The set also includes some extra red pieces so that you can change the rank of droid to Security or buy multiple sets and build an entire droid army. Movable arms extend up an down. 1. TECHNIC Pit Droid 8000

Year: 2000
Original MSRP: $20.00
Pieces: 223
Buy: https://ebay.us/zsL6pi

The first ever buildable droid, the Pit Droid takes inspiration from the lovable repair droids from Watto’s shop in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999). Additional pit droids appear in The Mandalorian Disney+ series. The buildable Pit Droid features a green and tan color scheme and comes co-branded as part of the LEGO Technic product line.

The droid indeed folds up, just like in the movies, and comes equipped with two of its own buildable tools. Some builders report that the folding capability is a bit clumsy and fickle. Another limitations of the set is the Pit Droid doesn’t stand very easily (if at all!) unsupported, so you’ll need to prop it up against the wall in order to display the set.
