Imperial Emblem Backstory
According to Star Wars lore, Emperor Palpatine’s Empire adapted the emblem from the eight-spoked Republic crest during the Empire’s founding year in 19 BBY. A bold symbol of the Empire, the Imperial emblem adorns a variety of items ranging from uniforms, to armor, and cargo crates up to flags and even starships!
John Mollo, costume designer for the film Star Wars: A New Hope (1977), developed the Imperial emblem. Mollo’s design took inspiration from an overhead view 18th century fortifications (Source: Star Wars Insider Magazine #98 in 2008).
