Laan Tik Lightsaber (Jar Jar Binks Lightsaber) in Star Wars Canon
Laan Tik serves as a Jedi General during the Clone Wars. General Tik wields the blue-bladed lightsaber in the Battle of Mimban against Separatist forces. General Tik fights alongside Captain Rex, the 501st Legion, and Mud Jumper of the 224th Division. Representative Jar Jar Binks is also present in order to interact with the Mimbese.
Laan Tik is shot in the chest during the battle and his lightsaber falls out of the Jedi’s hands. The clone forces fall back. Jar Jar Binks recovers the Laan Tik lightsaber in order to prevent the weapon from falling into enemy hands.
Captain Rex contacts command, requesting an extraction shuttle for Republic forces. Meanwhile, Rex decides to destroy the nearby droid deflector shield generator. Although he undergoes the mission alone, Jar Jar Binks and a clone trooper follow him. During the journey, Jar Jar Binks ignites the lightsaber and cuts down two battle droids, saving Rex’s life. Binks, a rare non-Force user to wield a lightsaber, drops the still-ignited weapon shortly after. Rex confiscates the lightsaber from Jar Jar, saying, “Give me that. You could get yourself killed…”. Rex hands Binks his blaster rifle.
Behind the Scenes
The Laan Tik lightsaber first appears in the story “501 Plus One” in the come book Star Wars Age of the Republic Special 1 (2019). Jar Jar wielding a lightsaber may be a nod to the Darth Jar Jar fan theory. The controversial fan theory posits that Jar Jar Binks is secretly powerful Sith Lord and his clumsiness and awkwardness is a ruse.
