On August 8th, ESPN2 will rebrand itself as ESPN8: The Ocho for one day only. Among the programming, the sports network will include one hour of lightsaber fights from The Saber Legion (TSL). The special program, which runs from 12:00 to 1:00pm Eastern, is called The Saber Legion: Awakening Championship Series.
Founded in May 2015, The Saber Legion is the world’s largest custom saber dueling organization. The non-profit group is based in Minnesota and has amassed a membership of thousands with chapters across the United States and around the world.
Although The Saber Legion previously had been featured in a clip on ESPN, the August 8 broadcast marks organization’s first long form, hour-long special on television. The televised broadcast of The Saber Legion: Awakening Championship Series demonstrates the growing popularity of lightsaber fighting as a sport and increasingly mainstream appeal of the custom lightsaber hobby as whole.
The one-day rebranding of ESPN 2 as ESPN 8: The Ocho is a nod to the 2004 movie Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story. The sports comedy film, starring Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller, jokingly depicts a fictitious ESPN8: The Ocho as a network that shows obscure sports.
The Saber Legion lightsaber fights will join a bevy of other less common sports and activities featured during the August 8th programming. Other August 8th ESPN2 programming will include: sumo wresting, chess boxing, hamburger and bratwurst competitive eating championships and, fittingly, the 2018 Dodgeball World Cup. The day’s programming wraps up with a late evening showing of the Dodgeball movie.
The 2018 Saber Legion 2018: Awakening will air on August 8 from 12:00pm to 1:00pm Eastern on ESPN 2. Check your local listings or the ESPN website for details.
