The Galaxy’s Edge Camtono Safe is not an ice cream machine, but a functioning safe with a 6-digit password! According to Star Wars lore, a camtono is a type of small security container that’s particularly popular among bounty hunters and smugglers. The camtono has captivated fan imagination since release of The Empire Strikes Back (1980). In a blink-or-you’d-miss-it moment in the film, a man in an orange jump suit carries the device that would eventually become known as a camtono under his arm down a hallway. The prop in the scene, however, is an extremely identifiable, unaltered Hamilton Beach 4-Quart Capacity Ice Cream Maker! Years later The Mandalorian and the Book of Boba Fett bring back the fan favorite device as a fully functioning prop with a more front-and-center role to the plot.
Galaxy’s Edge Camtono Safe Description and Specs
The Galaxy’s Edge camtono is about 12 inches tall and 10.25 inches in diameter. Device, which is predominantly made of plastic, is not big enough to hold most lightsabers vertically inside. The device may, however, hold a Galaxy’s Edge holocron, kyber crystals, beskar, etc. Both the interior and exterior of the container feature subtle, light weathering.
Finding the Batteries and On/Off Switch
Camtono requires 3 AAA batteries (included). Battery compartment is situated on the bottom of the device. Note that when you need to change the batteries, you’ll need a small Philips screwdriver in order to unscrew a single Phillips screw holding the battery compartment closed. A small, sliding on/off switch is situated on the bottom of the device as well.
How the Camtono Safe Works
When you first open the box, the camtono safe comes pre-set with a default password. Press the button nearest the central handle, called button 1, six times in a row to unlock the device the first time. Each time you press the button, a rectangular light-up button to side of the keypad will illuminate red. The final time you press button 1, however, the light-up button will illuminate green instead. Twist the top handle in order to unlock and release the three-internal doors. A subtle orange accent light glows inside the device when you open it.
Changing the Password
If you’d like to reset the password, hold down the rectangular light-up button until the button begins blinking green. While the light is blinking green, use the three toggle switches to input a new six-digit password into the keypad. The password must include exactly six button presses. The light will briefly change to red each time you press a toggle switch. When your new password is complete, the light will turn off altogether.
Possible Uses
The device is suitable for display or cosplay. Keep the device closed to carry the items or keep the items inside. Alternatively, keep one door or all three doors open to put the item(s) inside on display.
The camtono safe complements various lightsaber and Star Wars displays. You could put small Galaxy’s Edge items inside like: beskar, credits, a holocron, kyber crystals or even the ever-popular Star Wars spork souvenir. You could also create an action figure scene or display inside. You could use the device to theatrically reveal any small gift to a friend or family member! Heck, toss an engagement ring inside and propose to a significant other, if you think they’d appreciate the gesture.
The camtono safe also serves as a fun cosplay prop. The storage container particularly complements bounty hunter, smuggler, and scoundrel costumes. You could also dress as the mysterious man in an orange jump suit in the Empire Strikes Back. I’m sure you could come up with a reason for a Jedi, Sith or nerf herder to be carrying one as well. It’s a Functioning Safe, But Not a “Real” Safe
The main thing you don’t want to do with the Galaxy’s Edge camtono safe is use the device as a safe with real valuables inside. Anyone can reset the password at any time without putting in the previous password. Anyone can also simply smash the plastic container to access the contents.
