About Squishmallows

Since Los Angeles based Johnathan Kelly of Kelly Toys Holdings LLC launched the Squishmallows brand in 2017, over 1000 different Squishmallows characters have been produced. Toy company Jazwares, the maker of the Star Wars Micro Galaxy Squadron line, acquired the brand in 2018.

In their first two years in the business alone the brand sold over 50 million creatures worldwide. The brand name is a mashup of the word “squish” and “marshmallow”. The former refers to the soft, cute and huggable nature of plush toys while the later refers to the rotund, marshmallow-like shape of the characters and soft, fluffy filling.

Squishmallows exploded in popularity in 2020. As many people were staying home and working from home, fans began widely sharing their collections on social media platforms like TikTok.

Star Wars Squishmallows: The Complete List

In 2020, Kelly Toys released a squad (i.e. product wave) of four different Squishmallows versions of Star Wars characters. It’s unclear if company will release additional Star Wars designs in the future. A few characters or creatures we’d really love to see include: baby Ewok, porg, tauntaun, Jawa, Chopper, Babu Frik, loth cat, and, of course, Yoda.

In a 2020 interview with Walgreens, Jeanne Yoon, SVP of Product Development and Sales at Kelly Toys discussed some of the unique challenges of adapting an existing Star Wars character into a Squishmallows version. “One of our biggest challenges is transforming 3D characters into 2D artwork for our design process,” Yoon said. “Squishmallows have a smooth and soft surface, so we cannot add certain characteristics like wrinkles and glossy eyes.”
