Darth Maleval Lightsaber in Star Wars Legends

Although Darth Maleval possesses and wields a red-bladed Sith lightsaber, the Sith Lord prefers to use his shock whip in combat. The shock whip is less lethal and more painful in combat than a lightsaber. Maleval, a brutal and merciless Sith Lord, would often use both weapons in tandem.

In 137 ABY, Darth Krayt overthrows Emperor Roan Fel. Krayt dispatches Darth Maleval to command the 407th Stormtrooper Division. The stormtrooper division, which had originally served Fel, was suffering from defections. Maleval arrives in order to ensure the loyalty of the troops. Krayt commands the 407th Division, including the Joker Squad, during a mission to retake the 908th Stormtrooper Division on the Outer Rim planet Borosk.

During the ensuing battle, what would become known as the Battle of Borosk, Darth Maleval wields his red-bladed lightsaber in one hand and the shock whip in the other hand. He indiscriminately kills stormtroopers on both sides of the battle. When Lieutenant Gil Cassel 407th Division approaches Maleval with the prospect of a truce, Maleval replies that the entire 908th Division will be killed to deter any other resistance to Krayt’s newly formed Empire.

Darth Maleval commands Joker Squad to lead an attack on the 908th Division. After some internal discussion, the group reluctantly agrees to follow the orders. When the battle is over, Maleval presents Captain Jared Cassel of the 908th Division to his brother Lieutenant Gil Cassel 407th Division. He commands Lieutenant Gil Cassel to prove his loyalty by killing his brother. The lieutenant refuses and Darth Maleval strikes down both brothers with his lightsaber.

Darth Maleval’s Death

Joker Squad member Hondo Karr, angered by Maleval’s behavior, attacks the Sith Lord. Maleval wraps his shock whip around Karr. Before Maleval can electrocute Karr, Joker Squad member Anson Trask shoots Maleval from behind. Darth Maleval dies.

The surviving Joker Squad members lies to their superiors that Darth Maleval was killed in battle. They also claim Hondo Karr was vaporized. The lie enables Karr to defect from Darth Krayt’s Empire and eventually join the Galactic Alliance.

Behind the Scenes

The Darth Maleval lightsaber first appears in the comic book Star Wars Legacy 4: Noob (2006). The Darth Maleval shock whip is similar in design and function to the lightwhip, an uncommon lightsaber variation.

Darth Maleval is one of three Quarren Sith Lords to appear in the Star Wars: Legacy series. Darth Azard and an unidentified Quarren Sith are the other two Quarren Sith Lords in the series.
