What is Savi’s Workshop?

Savi’s Workshop is a 20-minute, immersive, build your own lightsaber experience where the lightsaber you build is yours to keep!

Most of the exterior Savi’s Workshop lightsaber hilt parts are made of cast metal, giving the lightsaber a realistic and substantial weight and feel. The chassis (interior), kyber crystal and blade are made of plastic. Additionally, certain specific hilt part options use some plastic (e.g. the Rancor Tooth pommel in the Elemental Nature theme).

Savi’s Workshop is separate and totally different from the Disney Parks Build Your Own lightsab Stations. The popular stations enable younger visitors to construct a more affordably priced plastic toy lightsaber out of mix-and-match parts.

Where is Savi’s Workshop?

Both Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge locations in Florida and California feature a Savi’s Workshop. The Florida location is inside Disney’s Hollywood Studios at the Walt Disney World Resort. The California location is inside Disneyland Park. You must have valid park admission for Disney’s Hollywood Studios (Florida) or Disneyland Park (California) the same day that you visit Savi’s Workshop.

The “secret” entrance to Savi’s Workshop is quietly tucked between Droid Depot and Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities, a store that sells a variety of complementary items for a Savi’s Workshop lightsaber (e.g. additional kyber crystals, lightsaber stands, belt clips, etc.)

When Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge first opened in 2019, the Savi’s Workshop lightsaber building experience cost $199.99 plus sales tax. In April 2021, the Savi’s Workshop lightsaber price increased roughly 10% from $199.99 plus sales tax to $219.99 plus sales tax. In October 2022, the price increased again to $249.99 (about 14% increase).

Are there discounts?

The lightsabers are non-refundable and are also not eligible for Annual Passholder or other discounts.

Savi’s Workshop Age Minimum

The Savi’s Workshop building experience is suitable for children and adults alike. The recommended age minimum for the experience is 5 years old. The lightsaber builder may bring up to one guest into the experience area. The accompanying guest may NOT build a lightsaber.

At least one person in each party must be at least 14 years old. For example, a 5 year old builder must be accompanied by a guest (i.e. sibling, cousin, etc.) who is at least 14 years old.

Savi’s Workshop Capacity

The build chamber is intimate and extremely limited in capacity. Only 14 individuals may construct lightsabers during each build session. Each builder may bring one guest. The guest is not allowed to build a lightsaber.

Capacity is subject to change. Note that Disney has operated the experience with reduced capacity during COVID.

Reservations and Check in

Due to the popularly of the lightsaber building experience, advance reservations are recommended. Same day reservations and walk-ins may be accepted, depending availability. Although you need to provide credit card information during the reservation, the card is only charged upon arrival.

Savi’s Workshop accepts reservation cancellations at least 24 hours prior to the appointment. Disney states, “If you fail to timely cancel and are a no-show, the credit card provided at the time of reservation will be charged the full price per builder.”

Check in

Arrive no earlier than 15 minutes before your reservation in order to check in. All individuals on the reservation must be present during check-in. Have the reservation confirmation, photo ID and the credit card provided at the time of booking available.

Your Lightsaber Build Session

After your party checks in, knowledgeable individuals referred at The Gatherers begin guiding the lightsaber building process. A Gatherer introduces you to the four available themes of lightsaber parts: Peace and Justice, Power and Control, Elemental Nature, or Protection and Defense.

Four Savi’s Workshop Lightsaber Theme Options Explained

Each lightsaber theme centers around a particular philosophy or era and features a signature color scheme and design aesthetic.

Peace and Justice includes Jedi lightsaber part options that are mostly silver with come black or gold accent colors.

Power and Control encompasses dark side or Sith Lightsaber parts with some angular features and lots of black and some red accents.

Elemental Nature features nature and environment themed lightsaber parts including Bantha hide, Brylark wood, Cartusian whale bone and even a Rancor tooth!

Protection and Defense exudes an ancient, Old Republic era vibe. The mostly silver pieces feature some bronze, gold, and black accent colors.

Disney refreshed the design of all 4 themes in 2023. The initial piece designs from 2019 are now retired and may sell at a premium in the secondhand market. The new piece designs still share a similar design aesthetic and color scheme with the retired pieces of the same theme.

For a more in-depth review of all of the lightsaber themes, along with both the 2019 and 2023 parts, check out our comprehensive article Savi’s Workshop: 4 Lightsaber Themes Explained.

Selecting a Your Lightsaber Theme

After the builder considers the four lightsaber theme options, they must choose one of the themes. The builder receives a cloisonné pin identifying their selected lightsaber theme. A builder may only construct their lightsaber using parts from their selected theme. You’re not allowed to construct a lightsaber using parts from multiple themes at the same time.

All builders and guests now enter the build chamber and settle into the own build station. Each builder will construct their lightsaber at this station.

Selecting Your Kyber Crystal

After a brief introduction from a Gatherer, builders select a kyber crystal for the lightsaber. The kyber crystal color determines the lightsaber blade color of the completed lightsaber. For example, selecting a red crystal means the lightsaber blade will illuminate red. There are four kyber crystal color options available during the build session: red, blue, green or violet.

Extra kyber crystals, including yellow and white crystals, are available for purchase next door at Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities. Also, some rare black kyber crystals are randomly included in red kyber crystal packaging at Dok-Ondar’s.

Choosing Your ‘Scrap Metal’, Building Your Lightsaber

Each builder examines their tray of scrap metal (i.e. lightsaber parts options), which matches the theme of the cloisonné pin. A Gatherer explains the purpose of each type of piece in the tray. Each parts tray includes:

  • 1 hilt (chassis with crystal chamber and removable battery pack)
  • 2 emitters (select 1)
  • 4 sleeves (select 2)
  • 2 end caps (select 1)
  • 2 sets of activation plates and switches (select 1 set)

The Gatherers are available to answer questions and guide the builder through the lightsaber construction process, from installing the kyber crystal to capping off the end of the hilt with a pommel. A Gatherer inspects the lightsaber to make sure it’s assembled properly and the pieces are screwed in tight.

Finally, a 31 inch Galaxy’s Edge blade is attached to the hilt and the builder may activate their very own, handbuilt lightsaber for the first time! The blade is compatible with the character inspired legacy lightsabers from Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities.

What’s included in each build session?

Savi’s Workshop includes:
x1 handbuilt lightsaber
x1 Galaxy’s Edge lightsaber blade (31 inches long, detachable from the hilt)
x1 kyber crystal (red, blue, green or violet)
x1 padded lightsaber carrying bag
x1 cloisonné pin identifying your lightsaber theme

Along with the physical lightsaber and items listed above, in true Disney fashion, Savi’s Workshop also includes a fun and immersive 20-minute lightsaber building experience. Each builder may be accompanied by one guest (guest may not build a lightsaber).

Rancor End Cap and Loth-cat End Cap

In late January 2022 Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge released a Rancor End Cap and Loth-cat End Cap. Although the end caps may connect to a Savi’s Workshop lightsaber, the pieces are not available at Savi’s Workshop directly. Each end cap may be purchased separately at the Galaxy’s Edge Creature Stall. Rancor and Loth-cat End Cap photos provided by eBay user jokesonyou87.

Where to Buy a Savi’s Workshop Lightsaber

Savi’s Workshop is the ONLY official source for snagging a Savi’s Workshop lightsaber. Basically, you must attend a 20 minute build session at the workshop and you construct a lightsaber that’s yours to keep. The Savi’s Workshop lightsaber is not sold anywhere else in Galaxy’s Edge, although Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities sells an assortment of character inspired legacy lightsabers at a similar price.

If you’d like to purchase a Savi’s Workshop lightsaber without going to the park, your options are limited. You’d need to find a friend or someone to build the lightsaber for you. Alternatively, you could simply purchase a Savi’s Workshop lightsaber in a second hand market like eBay (for a premium).

Is the Savi’s Workshop Lightsaber Worth the Price?

Beauty is in the eye of beholder. Likewise, the value of an experience and concept of what’s “worth it” is in the eye of the beholder as well. Some Star Wars fans see the Savi’s Workshop lightsaber building experience as a dream come true and memory they will treasure forever. Other Star Wars fans, and non-Star Wars fans, may not be as enthusiastic about spending $250+.

If you’re looking to spend over $250 on a lightsaber, many custom sabers in a similar price range are higher quality, more responsive, and more feature-rich than a Savi’s Workshop lightsaber. Custom sabers are not officially licensed and don’t come with an unforgettable lightsaber building experience, however.

Lightsaber Accessories From Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities

Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities, conveniently located next door to Savi’s Workshop, sells a variety of accessories and add-ons for Savi’s Workshop lightsabers. Lightsabers and accessories include:

Dok-Ondar’s Den also sells clothing like Jedi robes and Sith robes and an extensive assortment artifacts and other decorative items. Note that the Rancor End Cap and Loth-cat End Cap are sold at the Creature Stall.

Is there a Savi’s Workshop lightsaber coupler?

Want to create a Darth Maul style saberstaff out of two Savi’s Workshop lightsabers? Unfortunately Disney does not offer an official Savi’s Workshop coupler. Ebay seller RENEVforge sells a custom aluminum coupler that joins two Savi’s Workshop lightsabers together.

Custom Savi’s Workshop Compatible Parts (Fan Made)

A wide selection of custom (i.e. unofficial) Savi’s Workshop compatible parts are available online, particularly on eBay and Etsy. Parts range from custom scrap metal pieces (some 3D printed), kyber crystals, stands and more.
