Every lightsaber blade color in Star Wars has a story. Though Jedi commonly wield blue or green lightsabers and Sith commonly wield red lightsabers, eight other lightsaber colors exist in Star Wars Canon. Each lightsaber’s blade color is determined by the kyber crystal, the heart of every lightsaber. Jedi bond with their lightsaber’s kyber crystal while Sith bend the crystal to their will. Let’s take a closer look at all eleven lightsaber colors in Star Wars Canon.

1. Black Lightsaber

Black-bladed lightsabers are extremely rare in Star Wars Canon. The ancient Darksaber, a legendary symbol of power for the Mandalorians, emits a black blade with a flat, sword-like appearance. No other black-bladed lightsabers are known to exist in Star Wars Canon. In Star Wars Legends, Darth Vader’s secret apprentice Galen Marek / Starkiller may optionally wield a black lightsaber in the video games Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II.

2. Blue Lightsaber

Blue-bladed lightsabers are extremely common among Jedi. Although blue lightsabers are common, the hue of the blue lightsaber may range from light blue to medium or dark blue. In Star Wars Legends the Jedi Guardians, Jedi who focus their studies on martial training and combat, commonly wield blue lightsabers.

3. Cyan Lightsaber

A cyan-bladed lightsaber is a playable option the video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (2019). In the game, the playable character Cal Kestis may optionally wield a cyan lightsaber. No other characters in Star Wars Canon are known to wield cyan lightsabers.

4. Green Lightsaber

Green-bladed lightsabers are extremely common among Jedi. Yoda, Qui-Gon Jinn, and Luke Skywalker all wield green lightsabers. In Star Wars Legends, Jedi Consulars wield green lightsabers. Jedi Consulars specialize in diplomacy and only draw their lightsabers a last resort.

As a Jedi Padawan, Ahoka Tano wields a lime green lightsaber shoto as an off-hand lightsaber. Lime green lightsabers are not nearly as common as other shades of green.

5. Indigo Lightsaber

An indigo lightsaber emits a deep blade color in between blue and violet (purple). Indigo is sometimes challenging to distinguish from some shades of blue or purple. Nevertheless, the video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order offers an indigo lightsaber color option in addition to default blue lightsaber and optional purple lightsaber. In the game Cal Kestis may optionally wield an indigo lightsaber. No other characters in Star Wars Canon are known to wield indigo lightsabers.

6. Magenta Lightsaber

No other characters in Star Wars Canon are known to wield magenta lightsabers. In Star Wars Legends, Mara Jade and the Old Republic era Scions of Zakuul wield magenta lightsabers.

7. Orange Lightsaber

An orange-bladed lightsaber is a playable option in the video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (2019). The orange blade color was originally only available to those who pre-ordered the game. In the game, Cal Kestis may optionally wield a orange lightsaber. No other characters in Star Wars Canon are known to wield orange lightsabers. In Star Wars Legends, Jedi Master Yaddle, members of the Mandalorian Knights, and the Sith Lord Tulak Hord all wield orange lightsabers.

The first live-action orange lightsaber debuted in the trailer for Ahsoka, a 2024 Disney+ series. Baylan Skoll and his apprentice Shin Hati each wield an orange lightsaber (the latter wields a double-bladed reddish orange lightsaber, in fact!).

8. Purple Lightsaber

A purple lightsaber emits a blade color that combines blue and red. The hue of a purple lightsaber may range from almost dark pink a violet/deep purple color. Purple lightsabers are uncommon, but not unheard of in Star Wars Canon.

Several purple lightsaber wielders are unconventional or even nonconformist. The wise and powerful Jedi Council member Mace Windu is arguably the most famous purple lightsaber wielder. Two unorthodox High Republic era characters wield purple lightsabers as well: young Jedi prodigy Vernestra Rwoh and the saber-for-hire Ty Yorrick. Revan, an Old Republic era Jedi turned Sith turned Jedi, wields a violet-bladed lightsaber as well. In Star Wars Legends, Anakin Solo and Jaina Solo both wield violet lightsabers along with Ki-Adi-Mundi and a few other characters.

9. Red Lightsaber

Red-bladed lightsabers are extremely common among the ranks of the Sith, the Jedi hunting Inquisitors, and other dark side Force users. Why do so many dark side Force users wield red lightsabers? The answer lies in the kyber crystal (i.e. lightsaber crystal): the heart of all lightsabers.

Typically a Jedi or light side Force user forms an close bond in the Force with the kyber crystal inside their lightsaber. Dark side Force users, however, forgo bonding and instead channel their anger and hatred to bend the kyber crystal to their will. The corrupting of the crystal is known as bleeding the crystal. After the process is complete, the crystal turns red and the dark side Force user’s lightsaber begins emitting a red blade.

In Star Wars Canon, only dark side Force users construct and wield red lightsabers. In Star Wars Legends, red lightsabers are no reserved for for dark side Force users. Jedi Council member Adi Gallia wields a crimson lightsaber. Fellow Jedi Council members Even Piell and Depa Billaba are both depicted wielding red lightsabers in some Star Wars comic books as well. Notably, all three Jedi are later depicted wielding more “traditional” blue or green lightsabers in other media.

10. White Lightsaber

A white lightsaber is achromatic, meaning the color has not hue. White lightsaber wielders are uncommonly and tend to walk their own path. Ahsoka Tano wields white lightsabers after leaving the Jedi Order. Similarly, the High Republic era Jedi Knight Orla Jareni is a Wayseeker and wields a hinged double-bladed lightsaber that emits white blades. A Wayseeker is a designation for a Jedi who serves the Jedi Order, but operates independently of the Jedi Council.

Aside from Tano and Jareni, No other Jedi in Star Wars Canon are known to wield white lightsabers. In Star Wars Legends, the Imperial Knights, a group of Force-users loyal to the Emperor-in-exile Roan Fel, all wield white lightsabers.

11. Yellow Lightsaber

Yellow-bladed lightsabers are uncommon in Star Wars Canon. Yellow lightsabers are commonly wielded by individuals who experience a change of identity. Rey takes on the last name Skywalker and constructs a yellow-bladed lightsaber with a golden hue. The prestigious Jedi Temple Guards mask their identities and all wield yellow-bladed lightsabers with the same design. After Count Dooku betrays Ventress, she begins to walk her own path. Ventress acquires a yellow-bladed lightsaber from the black market.

In Star Wars Legends, several members of the Old Republic era Eternal Empire of Zakuul wield yellow-bladed lightsabers including the twins Arcann and Thexon. The Wookiee Jedi Tyvokka and the Dark Jedi Yun wield yellow lightsabers in Star Wars Legends, too.
