Lightsaber Cutlass Explained | Lightsaber Terminology

A lightsaber cutlass is a rare lightsaber variation inspired by the design of the real world cutlass, a 17th century slashing sword with a short blade. The video game Star Wars: The Old Republic offered an in-game lightsaber cutlass known as the Swashbuckler’s Lightsaber.

The historic, real world weapon has a straight or slightly curved blade. A weapon commonly associated with pirates, a cutlass features a guard to protect the hand.

Lightsaber Cutlass in Star Wars: The Old Republic

A lightsaber cutlass appears in the Star Wars franchise in the video game Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR). The game features a lightsaber cutlass design called the Swashbuckler’s Lightsaber. The lightsaber is equipped with a curved hand guard and a flared, bell-shaped emitter similar to the Luke Skywalker ROTJ lightsaber. The lightsaber emits a straight blade with a distinctive black-blue striated color.

The Swashbuckler’s Lightsaber was exclusively available as a PvP Season 4 Silver Reward and is not currently available in-game. Some other in-game lightsabers, like Rishi’s Lightsaber MK2, exhibit a hand guard similar to a cutlass hand guard.
