The Qui-Gon Jinn lightsaber is a single-bladed green lightsaber wielded by Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn. Qui-Gon Jinn is a Rise of the Empire era human male Jedi Master in Star Wars Canon. In his early years he is assigned as a Padawan to Jedi Master Dooku and in his later years he takes on Obi-Wan Kenobi as his own apprentice. The Sith Lord Darth Maul kills Qui-Gon Jinn during a lightsaber duel on Naboo.

Qui-Gon Jinn Lightsaber in Star Wars Canon

The Qui-Gon Jinn lightsaber is comprised of a 28.5 cm long and 3.8 cm wide cylindrical hilt. The two-toned alloy metal hilt is black and silver in color. The front face of the hilt features a ridged grip section. A red button serves as an activation switch. The lightsaber is equipped with an Adegan crystal and emits a green blade.

As a student at the Jedi Temple, Qui-Gon Jinn learns lightsaber combat from Jedi Master Tera Sinube. Jedi Master Dooku takes on Qui-Gon Jinn as an apprentice. Jinn advances to the rank of Jedi Master and develops a reputation as a maverick Jedi. Jinn often disobeys the Jedi Code in order to do what he feels is right. He takes on Obi-Wan Kenobi as his Padawan learner.

Qui-Gon Jinn unexpectedly discovers a Force-sensitive slave boy named Anakin Skywalker on the planet Tatooine. Jinn believes the kind-hearted boy may be the Chosen One, destined to bring balance to the Force. Jinn helps free the boy from slavery and offers to bring him to the Jedi Council. As Jinn, Skywalker, and several others prepare to leave the planet, a black-robed Sith Lord named Darth Maul attacks. Maul engages Jinn in a brief lightsaber duel before Jinn escapes to the ship. The ship departs for Coruscant.

Qui-Gon Jinn tells the Jedi Council about his encounter with the Sith Lord. Although the Council is skeptical of the existance of a Sith Lord, the group states they will investigate the incident. The Jedi Council tests Anakin Skywalker’s aptitude and conclude that the boy is indeed powerful in the Force, but too old to begin Jedi training.

Lightsaber Duel on Naboo

During the Battle of Naboo, the Sith Lord Darth Maul confronts Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Naboo hanger. Maul ignites his double-bladed lightsaber. The two Jedi ignite their respective single-bladed lightsabers. The two Jedi and the Sith Lord engage in a contentious and acrobatic lightsaber duel through the Theed Palace generator complex. During the battle, Obi-Wan is briefly delayed and separated from his master. Qui-Gon Jinn and Darth Maul duel until Maul knocks Jinn off balance and stabs the Jedi Master through the chest. Jinn collapses and drops his lightsaber.

Obi-Wan engages Maul in lightsaber combat. Maul disarms the Jedi Padawan and knocks him part of the way down a generator shaft. The Sith Lord kicks Kenobi’s lightsaber down the pit. Using the Force, Obi-Wan Kenobi leaps out of the generator shaft and draws his fallen master’s lightsaber to him. Obi-Wan Kenobi ignites the Qui-Gon Jinn lightsaber and cuts the Sith Lord Darth Maul in half at the waist. The Sith Lord tumbles down the pit. After defeating the Sith Lord in battle, Obi-Wan Kenobi rushes to his dying master’s aid.

As a dying request, Qui-Gon Jinn asks Obi-Wan Kenobi to train Anakin Skywalker as a Jedi. Obi-Wan honors his master’s last request to train Anakin Skywalker.

What Happens to the Qui-Gon Jinn Lightsaber

After Qui-Gon Jinn’s death, Obi-Wan retains possession of the Qui-Gon Jinn lightsaber. After Obi-Wan Kenobi constructs a new lightsaber, he temporarily gives the lightsaber to his apprentice Anakin Skywalker. The Qui-Gon Jinn lightsaber eventually becomes part of a memorial at the Jedi Temple.

Behind the Scenes

The Qui-Gon Jinn lightsaber first appears in the film Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999). The Ashla lightsaber resembles the Qui-Gon Jinn lightsaber, but is smaller in size. Ashla is a Clone Wars era Jedi youngling.
