When was the last time you checked the batteries in your lightsaber? If you haven’t used your lightsaber for more than 2 or 3 months, then you need to check the state of your batteries. Checking your batteries is part of routine lightsaber maintenance that helps prevent damaging the battery and, in some cases, damaging the lightsaber itself.

Lightsabers with Alkaline Batteries
If the lightsaber uses an alkaline battery, it is best to remove the battery from the battery holder. Alkaline batteries can leak battery acid (blue stuff) if left too long inside a battery holder. When the blue stuff leaks into your battery holder and, in some cases, into your electronics and soundboard, the battery acid will damage those parts and it won’t work anymore. If you don’t use a lightsaber for several months, protect the electronics by removing alkaline batteries from the battery holder.
Lightsabers with Li-Ion Batteries
If the lightsaber uses a lithium ion (li-ion) rechargeable battery, the battery will continue to discharge when not in use, even in the presence of a kill key! A kill key will stop the current flow to the soundboard, but cannot stop the battery from discharging.
Charge your li-ion battery at least once a month. If the voltage of the battery gets too low, you may not be able to charge the battery again and you will have to buy a new battery. Li-ion rechargeable batteries are more costly to replace than the disposable alkaline batteries. To maintain its charge, just charge your battery at least once a month even if you don’t use it. Setting a schedule may help. For example, set the first day of the month as a battery charging day. After a while, it may become a habit. Consider adding a monthly battery charging reminder in your smart phone or calendar.
