A purple lightsaber, sometimes referred to as an amethyst lightsaber, is an uncommon lightsaber blade color. In Star Wars Canon, Mace Windu wields a purple-bladed lightsaber. In Star Wars Legends, Revan, Anakin Solo, Jaina Solo and Ki-Adi-Mundi all wield a purple-bladed or violet-bladed lightsaber.

Purple Lightsabers in Star Wars Canon

Mace Windu, Jedi Master and member of Jedi Council, wields a rare purple lightsaber. Rodian Jedi Knight Huulik also uses a purple lightsaber during the Clone Wars era.

Purple Lightsabers in Star Wars Legends

Revan uses a violet lightsaber along with a red lightsaber during the Old Republic era. Jaina Solo and her brother Anakin Solo both use violet lightsabers. Jedi Council Member Ki-Adi-Mundi wields a purple lightsaber as a Jedi Knight prior to attaining the rank of Jedi Master during the Clone Wars (he switches to a blue lightsaber after becoming a Jedi Master). Additionally, a purple with a black core lightsaber blade and a violet with black core blade are playable blade color options in the video game Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Behind the Scenes

Prior to the release of Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Mace Windu actor Samuel L. Jackson approached George Lucas, asking him to make Mace Windu’s lightsaber emit a blade purple. Jackson likes the color purple and wanted his powerful character to visually stand out in crowd scenes like the Battle of Geonosis. All of the lightsabers in Star Wars movies prior to Episode II had emitted blue, green, or red blades.

After initially turning down Jackson’s unconventional purple blade idea, Lucas ultimately acquiesced. Mace Windu wields a rare purple lightsaber in the film Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, and in other Star Wars media as well.

Purple is combination of blue and red. A purple lightsaber blade may connote royalty, power, ambition, wisdom and nobility.
