Savi’s Workshop Power and Control Lightsaber Review | Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge

This is a Savi’s Workshop Power and Control lightsaber from the Savi’s Workshop build your own lightsaber experience at Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland and Disney World. Out of the four Savi’s Workshop lightsaber themes, the dark side infused Power and Control theme features the most sinister looking pieces, called scrap metal, and also uses the most black accents.

Indeed, my completed Savi’s Workshop Power and Control lightsaber features many black and silver colored elements along with a few dark red accents. All of the scrap metal pieces attach to or cover the plastic chassis at the core of the lightsaber.

Tour of My Savi’s Workshop Power and Control Lightsaber

The menacing, split-top emitter piece is nearly all black and tapers near its top. The upper grip section features a series of shallow, black horizontal grooves along with some raised dark red, vertical accents. The upper grip section and lower grip sections are interchangeable. Moving down the hilt, the activation plates features a sliding black activation button on one plate and a decorative, transparent red half-sphere on the other plate. Both plates are bordered with dark red coloring. The lower grip section features a series of deep, black grooves–much deeper than the upper grip section. Finally, a tapering, partly black pommel caps off the lightsaber, mirroring the tapered emitter at the top of the hilt. The pommel features a D-ring, allowing the lightsaber hilt to attach to a Galaxy’s Edge Lightsaber Belt Clip or some custom/off brand belt clips as well.

Savi’s Workshop lightsabers have a child-like and somewhat child friendly vibe. The lightsaber hilt uses very few small parts and there are no rough or jagged edges. The the coloring is muted, yet exaggerated. Overall, the hilt has an oversized and almost cartoonish appearance. Savi’s Workshop lightsabers are recommended for ages 5+, although young kids may find the lightsaber large, heavy and cumbersome.

Kyber Crystal: The Heart of a Savi’s Workshop Lightsaber

The two activation plates cover up the kyber crystal inside the crystal chamber of the lightsaber’s chassis. The kyber crystal gently snaps into place inside the crystal chamber. A lightsaber makes a sound and the kyber crystal flickers softly, indicating the lightsaber recognizes the crystal. The crystal chamber with its interactive kyber crystal is one of the coolest and most innovative features of the hilt.

My kyber crystal is red–it’s a little hard to imagine using ANY other kyber crystal color with the dark side-themed Power and Control lightsaber. Lightsaber builders select one of four plastic, semi-transparent kyber crystal colors during the build session: red, blue, green or purple. Each kyber crystal, which is plastic and semi-transparent, is embedded with an RFID chip that interacts with the Savi’s Workshop lightsaber or a Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge holocron.

The kyber crystal color determines the color of the Savi’s Workshop lightsaber blade. The kyber crystal also activates dialogue in the Jedi and Sith holocrons from Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities (sold separately).

Savi’s Workshop Lightsaber Size

Savi’s Workshop lightsabers are about 2 inches in diameter (the lightsabers are likely wide due to the presence of the interior crystal chamber). Savi’s Workshop lightsaber hilts range in length from around 8 to 10 inches, depending on the scrap metal pieces selected to build the lightsaber. Savi’s Workshop lightsabers are also a bit heavy since the exterior components are mostly made from metal.
