What is a holocron? | Lightsaber Terminology

A holocron, similar to a datacron, is a palm-sized repository of Jedi or Sith knowledge, wisdom and ancient teachings. Holocrons may only be accessed by using the Force and are typically polyhedrons comprised of a crystalline faceted exterior and internal hardware. Holocrons come in many shapes, although the Jedi primarily utilize cubes and sometimes dodecahedrons or cuboctahedrons while the Sith favor pyramids.

The sensitive information stored inside a holocron is protected by several security measures. First, only those attuned with the Force can open the device. Additionally, many holocrons only activate in the presence of a specific memory crystal. Once the device is opened, the user may access an interactive hologram of the person who recorded their knowledge in the holocron.

Before the rise of the Empire, the Jedi Order stored hundreds of holocrons at the Jedi Archives on Coruscant. Some of the rarest and most valuable holocrons were safeguarded in the secure Holocron Vault.

Unlike holocrons, a standard datacron does not require use of the Force to open the information storage device. Sometimes Jedi holocrons are referred to as Jedi datacrons, however.

Holocron Origins

Holocrons first entered Star Wars Canon in a 2009 episode of the Clone Wars animated series entitled “Holocron Heist”. The holocron had previously appeared in Star Wars Legends in the 1991-1992 Dark Empire comic book series.

Holocrons in Real Life

Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge, the Star Wars Land at Disneyland and Disney World, sells officially licensed electronic Jedi holocrons and Sith holocrons with light and sound. Several Etsy sellers make custom illuminated holocrons as well.
