Star Wars ‘Fire and Ice’ Lightsaber That Never Made the Movies

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) could have featured a mysterious ‘fire and ice’ lightsaber. The unusual concept lightsaber, which is double-bladed, features one red blade and one blue blade. Most double-bladed lightsabers feature two blades that are the same color.

The concept lightsaber is depicted in artwork by Erik Tiemens in the book The Art of Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015). Generally, in Star Wars stories red bladed lightsabers are wielded by Sith and blue bladed lightsabers are wielded by Jedi. The book does NOT specify which character in Star Wars: The Force Awakens would have wielded the doubled-bladed ‘fire and ice’ lightsaber.

Although the conflicted Kylo Ren is a likely candidate to wield a ‘fire and ice’ lightsaber, it’s possible that another character like Rey could have wielded the double-bladed lightsaber, too. Early in the film, Rey is portrayed skillfully wielding a staff similar in shape and length to a double-bladed lightsaber. Some Star Wars fans have speculated (and hoped!) that Rey would wield a double-bladed lightsaber at some point in the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy.

The double-bladed ‘fire and ice’ lightsaber could have represented many things. The red and blue bladed lightsaber could reflect the inner turmoil and conflict of a single character (e.g. Kylo Ren, Rey, Luke Skywalker or someone else). The ‘fire and ice’ lightsaber could also more broadly symbolize the struggle of finding balance between the dark side and the light side of The Force.

Even though Star Wars: The Force Awakens discarded the double-bladed fire and ice lightsaber, it’s always possible that a future Star Wars movie or TV show could resurrect the concept of a blue and red double-bladed blue lightsaber. A ‘fire and ice’ lightsaber is a pretty cool concept after all.
