The Star Wars Darksaber toy by Rubie’s is a rare officially licensed Darksaber product. Despite the popularity of the Darksaber, an ominous black-bladed lightsaber, very few officially licensed Darksaber products exist. Hasbro does not make a Darksaber toy or Force FX lightsaber Darksaber collectible, for example.
UPDATE: Hasbro released the Mandalorian Darksaber Electronic Lightsaber Toy in 2020 and plans to release a Darksaber Force FX Lightsaber in late 2021.

Although the Rubie’s The Clone Wars Pre Vizsla Darksaber looks and feels a lot like a lightsaber toy, the product is technically not a toy, but rather it’s a ‘costume accessory’, according to Rubie’s. The Darksaber is meant to carry, hold, or maybe spin around–it’s NOT durable enough for sword play or dueling and would likely break.
Whether the Rubie’s Darksaber is technically a toy or not, the Darksaber is made of plastic and is designed for kids ages 6 and up. The boxy sword-like hilt is dark gray with a brushed silver or white weathering on the grates near the emitter section. The flat blade is a blackish color with slightly lighter colored and short, decorative squiggles that run the length of the blade. The blade tapers at the top ending into a rounded point that’s not sharp. The plastic blade is not removable–it’s permanently attached to the plastic hilt.
Rubie’s Darksaber is an electronic lightsaber that lights up when you flip the switch. The lightsaber DOES NOT have sound. The on/off switch to light up the lightsaber is located in the side of the hilt, just below the emitter section. LEDs illuminate the blade, however, when the blade is illuminated, you can see four visible LEDs inside the blade.
Overall, the Rubie’s Darksaber looks and feels like a cheaply made product that you could buy at the dollar store. The Darksaber retails for around $20 or so, which may be a bit overpriced for what you get. Nevertheless, the product captures the overall shape and appearance of the black-bladed Darksaber and could complement a costume of a Mandalorian, Darth Maul, or a Jedi or Sith character.
