It's no secret that the mysterious black kyber crystal is the rarest of the seven kyber crystal color available at Star Wars Galaxy's Edge

What are kyber crystals used for?

According to Star Wars canon, a kyber crystal is the heart of every lightsaber. A Galaxy’s Edge kyber crystal is a collectible plastic crystal, equipped with RFID technology, that interacts with other Galaxy’s Edge products like Savi’s Workshop lightsabers and Jedi and Sith holocrons. Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge sells kyber crystals in seven different colors: red, blue, green, purple, white, yellow and the elusive black.

Although an individual may collect a kyber crystal as a stand-alone item simply for display or decor purposes, more commonly, individuals install the kyber crystal in a Savi’s Workshop lightsaber or elecronic holocron from Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities.

The kyber crystal color generally determines the lightsaber blade color of the Savi’s Workshop lightsaber. The only exception is the black kyber crystal, which unlocks a red blade rather than a black one. Each crystal, depending on the color, also unlocks the wisdom of a different Star Wars character when the crystal is installed in a Dok-Ondar’s Den holocron.

How to get a black kyber crystal

The black kyber crystal is the rarest type of Galaxy’s Edge kyber crystal. Kyber crystals are packaged in small canister tubes at Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities. The outer tube color usually corresponds to the kyber crystal color…except in the case of black. There are no black tubes.

Black kyber crystals are randomly packaged in the same style of red tube as the red kyber crystals. In other words, if you purchase a red canister, you’re mostly likely getting a red kyber crystal, but it’s possible you’d get lucky and snag the rare and elusive black kyber crystal.

Never tell me the odds!

The odds of getting a black kyber crystal in a red tube were originally, reportedly, only 1 out of 100. This number is not confirmed, however. May the odds ever be in your favor. In 2019 park attendees quickly discovered an easy hack to hunt down scarce black kyber crystal. A park goer could identify a black crystal on the inside simply by shining a cellphone flashlight at the tube. A black kyber crystal would look darker on the inside than a red kyber crystal. Disney caught onto the hack, of course. Galaxy’s Edge has long since eliminated the flashlight hack by adding an extra black layer inside of the red tube to hide the crystal color.

Some park goers buy one red kyber crystal and get lucky and get a black one. Other park goers purchase multiple red kyber crystal canisters hoping that just one will contain a black kyber crystal. Purchasing a kyber crystal secondhand for an inflated price is the only way a buyer could guarantee they’d receive a black kyber crystal. That way is lot more expensive and not nearly as fun or exciting, but there you are.

Booming black kyber crystal resale market on eBay

Although eBay resellers are selling many Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge items at marked up prices, black kyber crystals in particular have been selling at astronomically high prices. A kyber crystal costs under $20 at Galaxy’s Edge. Since July 2018, over 100 black kyber crystals have sold on eBay for around $300 to $500 each. On July 2, 2019, one black kyber crystal sold for a staggering $1,675.00 at auction. The demand for elusive crystals is so high that one eBay seller has been selling red kyber crystals that he custom painted black (he has sold at least two so far).

Prices on the black kyber crystal may eventually taper. Some park attendees have speculated that getting a black kyber crystal seems more common than before. It’s possible, but unconfirmed, that Disney may have increased the odds of getting a black crystal.

What’s so special about a BLACK kyber crystal, anyway?

The black kyber crystal is the only kyber crystal that unlocks Snoke’s voice when it’s installed inside a Galaxy’s Edge Sith holocron. The complete list of Snoke phrases are as follows:

  • I cannot be betrayed. I cannot be beaten.
  • My worthy apprentice. Where there was conflict I now sense resolve. Where there was weakness, strength. Complete your training and fulfill your destiny.
  • So much strength. Darkness rises and light to meet it.
  • There’s been an awakening. Have you felt it?
  • The dark side and the light.
  • The seed of the Jedi order lives. As long as it does, hope lives.
  • Well done my good and faithful apprentice.
  • When I found you, ah, I saw what all masters live to see. Raw, untamed power. And beyond that, something truly special.

When the black crystal is installed in a Savi’s Workshop lightsaber, the blade will illuminate red, just like it would with a red kyber crystal. If you’re looking for a black lightsaber from Galaxy’s Edge, the Darksaber legacy lightsaber is currently your only option with a black blade.

Overall, the black kyber crystal is special mainly due to its artificial scarcity. The kyber crystal functions the same as the other colors, it’s just harder to find and is the only crystal to unlock Snoke’s voice. Plus there’s just something inherently cool and mysterious about about a black crystal.
