What are pommel cubes? | Lightsaber Terminology

Pommel cubes are a series of notched, gear tooth like design features found on some lightsaber hilt pommels. The size, shape, depth and overall interpretation of a pommel cube varies. Many pommel cubes, in fact, aren’t cube shaped at all. Pommel cubes are commonly cuboid, prism or pyramid-like in shape.

Origin of pommel cubes

Obi-Wan Kenobi lightsaber in Star Wars: A New Hope is the first lightsaber hilt to feature the pommel cubes design feature. The film’s propmakers assembled the Obi-Wan Kenobi hilt from ‘found’ parts, sourcing an Armitage Shanks Starlight model sink nob (circa 1960s) to use as the lightsaber hilt prop’s pommel.

Famous Star Wars lightsabers that use pommel cubes
• Luke Skywalker lightsaber (ROTJ)
• Obi-Wan Kenobi lightsaber (TPM, AOTC)
• Ahsoka Tan lightsaber (Clone Wars)
• Revan lightsaber

Removable cube ring
Some lightsaber hilt pommels arrange the pommel cubes into a removable cube ring. A cube ring may be added or removed from certain ‘door knob’ shaped pommels, like the Obi-Wan Kenobi The Phantom Menace or Attack of the Clones style lightsabers.

The Custom Saber Shop offers a ‘Cube Ring for Pommel Style 4’ that may be used with their pommel style 4. The Ultrasabers Guardian Pommel and Scorpion Pommel both use cube rings as well. The Korbanth OWK lightsaber hilt kit includes two styles of cube rings: one with holes and one without so the user may configure the hilt as an Obi-Wan Kenobi TPM or AOTC hilt.
