Savi’s Workshop Hilt Design
Realistic: Savi’s Workshop lightsabers are mostly made from metal components. The weight and feel of the cool metal adds realism and differentiates a Savi’s Workshop lightsaber from an inexpensive, plastic toy lightsaber (e.g. a Star Wars BladeBuilder’s lightsaber).
Fake: Although the hilt is metal, many lightsaber enthusiasts have commented that the hilt LOOKS plastic. The hilt designs feels cartoonish and exaggerated. The hilt is also oversized. Some Savi’s Workshop lightsaber hilts are 2 inches in diameter, which is wider than most character hilts. The modular mix and match parts look very prefabricated versus the ‘found parts’ look of character hilts like the Luke Skywalker hilt or the Darth Vader hilt.
Build-Your-Own ‘Custom’ Hilt Concept
Realistic: Another element that adds realism to a Savi’s Workshop lightsaber is that fact that each hilt is customized and built by the user. In Star Wars Canon, a major right of passage for Jedi and Sith is the construction of their own, unique lightsaber. The build-your-own construction process of a Savi’s Workshop lightsaber allows the builder to select their own pieces and create their own design.
Also, the design does not look like existing character inspired hilts (e.g. Obi-Wan Kenobi lightsaber, Darth Maul lightsaber, etc.). Realistically, it’s not very practical for anyone besides Obi-Wan Kenobi to wield Obi-Wan Kenobi’s lightsaber.
Fake: Savi’s Workshop lightsaber builders are limited to only a few choices of parts and can only select parts from a specific theme (e.g. Elemental Nature, Power and Control, etc.).
Lights, Sounds, and other Lightsaber Effects
Realistic: A Savi’s Workshop lightsaber lights up (with a saber scrolling effect), makes a bunch of cool lightsaber noises (hum, clash, turn on/turn off, etc.), and even features an interactive kyber crystal.
Fake: Savi’s Workshop lightsaber sounds can lag and the motion sensitivity is worse than many custom lightsabers. The blade is also not as bright as some custom lightsabers.
Kyber Crystal Chamber
Realistic: The Savi’s Workshop kyber crystal color determines the lightsaber blade color. When a builder uses a red kyber crystal, then the blade is red. If the user replaces the red kyber crystal with a blue one, then the blade changes to blue. The kyber crystal also slightly illuminates and makes a sound when installed. The kyber crystal can also interact with the holocrons from Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities.
Fake: The kyber crystal is made of plastic, unlike some custom kyber crystals that are made from quartz or other rock.
