The Star Wars: Episode IX Panel, arguably the most anticipated event of Star Wars Celebration 2019, unveiled new movie and set images, featured cast and crew interviews, and debuted the Star Wars Episode IX teaser trailer. Late night television host Stephen Colbert hosted the roughly one-hour event.

Lightsaber enthusiasts will be excited to see closeups on Rey’s Episode IX lightsaber in the newly released teaser trailer. In the trailer, Rey wields a lightsaber that appears to be a repaired or reconstructed version of the legendary Skywalker lightsaber. The Skywalker lightsaber, constructed by Anakin Skywalker, passed down to Luke Skywalker, and ultimately given to Rey in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, was last seen bleakly broken into two pieces near the end of Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi.

Although overall, Rey’s new Episode IX lightsaber looks visually similar to the Skywalker lightsaber portrayed in previous Star Wars movies, one of the most notable differences is the Episode IX lightsaber’s activation box. The activation box area is surrounded by what appears to be a dark brown band. Many other characteristic Skywalker lightsaber features, including the series of vertical t-track grips around the hilt’s base, the trademark bunny ears in the emitter area, and the iconic blue lightsaber blade, remain intact in the new Episode IX lightsaber’s design.

Two other major reveals during teaser trailer are the unveiling of the new film’s title, Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, and the trailer’s mysterious final line of dialogue. “No one’s ever really gone,” Luke Skywalker’s voice says, followed by the ominous laughter of…wait for it…Emperor Palpatine.

Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker is schedule to be released in United States on December 20, 2019.
