The Custom Saber Shop’s MHS V1 vs MHS V2 Lightsaber Parts: What’s the difference?

The Custom Saber Shop, a United States based custom saber company, is the creator of the Modular Hilt System (MHS). The Modular Hilt System is a mix-and-match lightsaber building system comprised of a series of interchangeable, modular lightsaber parts (e.g. emitter, body, pommel, etc). The buyer selects and combines various MHS hilt pieces in order to build their own custom lightsaber hilt design.

The Custom Saber Shop offers two versions of the Modular Hilt System (MHS): MHS V1 and MHS V2. What’s the difference? Here are some comparisons between MHS V1 and MHS V2.

Compatibility of MHSV1 vs MHSV2
Since MHS V1 and MHS V2 parts use different sizing and threading conventions, the systems are NOT compatible with each other. The Custom Saber Shop does offer MHS V1 to MHS V2 adapters. Whenever a different lightsaber company (i.e. Ultrasabers) states that its parts are ‘MHS compatible’, the company will generally mean that the parts are compatible with MHS V1.

Diameter of MHSV1 vs MHSV2
The Custom Saber Shop calls MHS V2 “just a smaller version of the MHS with a few key design changes” (Source: MHSv2 coming soon). MHS V1 parts are wider in diameter (both OD and ID) than MHS V2 parts. The MHS V1 series was developed in the early 2000s when lightsaber hilts needed to be a bit wider to accommodate internals like soundboards and other electronics. Now, lightsaber electronics are smaller so lightsaber hilts can be smaller in diameter as well.

Parts Variety of MHSV1 vs MHSV2
Since MHS V1 is older and more established than MHS V2, MHS V1 offers a much wider selection of lightsaber parts than MHS V2. For example, MHS V1 offers 20 styles of pommels while MHS V2 only offers 6 styles of pommels (as of 1/9/2019).

Price of MHSV1 vs MHSV2
Many MHS V2 pieces are less expensive than MHS V1 pieces. The reason for the price difference is many MHS V2 pieces have a lower materials cost due to their smaller size.

Will The Custom Saber Shop discontinue the older MHS V1 parts line?
The Custom Saber Shop currently sells both MHS V1 and MHS V2 parts at the same time. The company has NOT announced any plans or intentions to discontinue the MHS V1 parts line.
