2018 Is The Year of the Neopixel Lightsaber

The year 2018 is the year of the neopixel lightsaber. Neopixel is a somewhat new lightsaber technology that is becoming very popular very quickly among lightsaber enthusiasts. Neopixel lightsabers use removable blades that contain neopixel LED strips. Most other lightsabers either use in-hilt LEDs (i.e. the light source is contained within the hilt) or a permanently attached string blade (contains LEDs within the blade).

Neopixel lightsabers offer a staggering amount of customization options and visual effects related the blade color. Neopixel lightsabers can create a rainbow lightsaber blade, blaster bolt effect, scrolling effect, and other nuanced changes to the blade color since the user can control the individual LEDs within the neopixel strip.

Several major custom saber companies have releases neopixel sabers in their stores, most notably: Sabertrio, Vader’s Vault and Genesis Custom Sabers. Additionally, Ripper Blades has announced they are developing neopixel blades. No word yet on when custom saber giants Ultrasabers or Saberforge will add neopixel sabers to their stores, but, in order to stay competitive, the companies will likely add the new technology soon.

Neopixel is really one of the breakthrough technologies in the custom saber community in 2018. Certainly, other new technologies and custom saber companies have made some big breakthroughs this year. Bendu Armory released the first carbon fiber lightsaber and a potentially game-changing Quick Swap Chassis. The open-source Proffieboard lightsaber soundboard/controller is another exciting 2018 release. Proffieboard’s availability and distribution is a bit limited at the moment, but 2019 could very well be ‘The Year of Proffieboard’ as the board’s availability increases.

All things considered, who knows what other new lightsaber technologies are on the horizon. Disney filed a patent on a new extendable and retractable lightsaber blade 2018, which is an alleged improvement on current telescoping blades used on lightsaber toys.
