What is a tapered grip? | Lightsaber Terminology

A tapered grip is an area in the grip section of a lightsaber hilt where the diameter of the hilts narrows and then flares out again to the original hilt diameter. A tapered grip allows a lightsaber wielder to hold onto the hilt more easily and minimizes the likelihood of the hilt slipping in the wielder’s hand during dueling, spinning, practicing a dulon, etc. A tapered grip can also increase the overall attractiveness of the hilt design.

A tapered grip is common lightsaber grip style. Some tapers are more extreme than others. The taper on the The Pach Store’s Sanken 2 Crossguard Saber and the Ultrasabers Aeon V3 lightsaber is pretty pronounced. The tapered grip on the Electrum Sabercrafts Torrent lightsaber is much more nuanced. At first glance, you may not even notice the taper on the Torrent, but if you look a little closer and if you hand the hilt you feel the hilt narrow.

The grip section isn’t the only area on a lightsaber hilt where you can find a taper. Some lightsaber hilts use one or more tapers slightly below or above the activation switch. Tapers located near the activation switch or emitter area can double as a choke point. A choke point is a narrowing of the hilt that allows the wielder to more easily spin the lightsaber around.

  1. Good design feature, especially if you’re doing combat. Many of my designs have tapered wood handles, just like my 32 inch steel stage combat blades.Old Jedi Jim.
