What does ‘As First Built’ mean? | Lightsaber Terminology (Master Replicas)

‘As First Built’ (AFB) or ‘As First Built By’ (AFBB) is a term typically associated with certain Master Replicas prop lightsaber hilts (both 1:1 scale and 0.45 scale). The term will also occasionally be shortened to AFB or AFBB. ‘As first built’ means that the hilt will look like it’s in the same condition as when the lightsaber was built by, say, Obi-Wan Kenobi, for example.

The Star Wars: A New Hope Obi-Wan Kenobi lightsaber is probably one of the more famous ‘As First Built By’ lightsabers because the Obi-Wan Kenobi lightsaber shown in the Star Wars: A New Hope is very weathered and looks heavily used and worn.

Some collectors may prefer to own a clean-looking hilt rather than a weathered one. An ‘As First Built’ lightsaber is a hilt that looks brand new, like a Jedi or Sith just finished assembling the hilt yesterday.

Master Replicas seems to be the primary company that uses the ‘As First Built’ designation, but you may see the descriptor used elsewhere as well.

So ‘As First Built’ just meaning you’re getting a lightsaber that looks brand new (assuming that you purchased the lightsaber new, of course).

Do you own any ‘As First Built’ lightsabers? Do you prefer a weathered lightsaber hilt or an ‘As First Built’ lightsaber?
