Yes, you can ‘lose’ on an Ultrasabers Grab Bag Saber (no guaranteed value)

Yes, you can lose money on an Ultrasabers Grab Bag Saber. I received an Ultrasabers Dominix V2 as a Grab Bag Saber. The saber hilt has no upgrades and a Fire Orange LED. Dominix V2 retails for $64.99 on the Ultrasabers website. An Ultrasabers Grab Bag Saber retails for $70, so that’s a loss of $4.99.

Watch Yes, you can ‘lose’ on an Ultrasabers Grab Bag Saber (no guaranteed value) on YouTube

I contacted Ultrasabers’ customer service just to make sure there wasn’t some sort of mistake or mix-up with my order. Ultrasabers told me that there was no mistake. Grab Bag Sabres don’t have a guaranteed value.

If you read through the Ultrasabers Grab Bag Saber description, sure enough, none of text mentions anything about a guaranteed value. By contrast, if you read the Ultrasabers Mystery Box Saber description, the text states, ” If you purchase the $75 Mystery Box then you are guaranteed to get a saber that retails for $75 or more. If you purchase the $200 Mystery Box then you are guaranteed to get a saber that retails for $200 or more.” [Source: Ultrasabers Mystery Box Saber description; retrieved 3/30/2018]. Apparently an Ultrasabers $70 Grab Bag Saber, however, MAY NOT be worth at least $70.

Do you think that Ultrasabers should disclose somewhere in the Grab Bag Saber description that Grab Bag Sabers have no guaranteed value? Ultrasabers neither says that you’re guaranteed to receive a saber of a certain value nor says you could receive a so-called ‘losing’ hilt. Seems like Ultrasabers is withholding information. Also, if Ultrasabers DID mention the possibility of receiving a losing hilt as Grab Bag Saber, many potential customers would likely purchase an alternate saber, like a Mystery Box Saber, or just abandon Ultrasabers altogether and purchase from a different saber company instead.

Psychologically, customers don’t like the idea of losing, even if they’re losing a nominal amount like a few dollars. Losing just doesn’t feel good. From a business standpoint, allowing customers to experience a negative ‘losing’ feeling is bad for long term business. However, in the short term, Ultrasabers is able to profit more off its customers by sending items of a lesser value a Grab Bag Sabers.

Some SaberSourcing YouTube viewer said:
“From a business standpoint it’s a extra five bucks in the pocket.. so it’s good for them. From what I’m seeing is the saber industry is more concerned with the fast money then repeat business.” — TheLastSith 212

“Why do people still buy from SaberForge and UltraSabers? They obviously have questionable business practices. Stop buying from them!” — ro c

“I would rather just save up a couple more bucks and buy the saber I want from a different better company.” — LA LA

“Mystery Box looks like the better purchase all around. Chance of sound and no chance of ‘losing’.” — Sean Roussel

“My $55 Grab Bag(no blade) was a Aeon LE V2 ($69.99), but my $75 Mystery Box was a Dark Apprentice LE V4 in Artic Blue. I rather order $55 Grab Bags and just order a grip of $10 Grab Bag Blades.” — Star Walker

“Its absolutley disgusting that they even put the V2s in the grab bag pool, you cant do anything with them unless you are handy, and even if you are, taking those apart is ridiculous” — InsightfulChannel+

What do you think about Ultrasabers’ business practice of allowing customers to ‘lose’ money on a Grab Bag Saber (i.e. receive a lightsaber hilt lower in value than what they paid)?
