Ultrasabers lack of transparency on Mystery Box Sabers and Grab Bag Sabers

Ultrasabers lacks transparency on their Mystery Box Sabers and Grab Bag Sabers in several ways. First, Ultrasabers does not post the odds of receiving any given lightsaber or type of lightsaber as a Mystery Box or Grab Bag Saber. In my own experience and based on unboxing videos and posts from other buyers, it seems most likely you will receive a lightsaber within the range of what you’ve paid. The saber may be worth a little more or a little less (in the case of Grab Bag Sabers, which have no guaranteed value).

Most lightsabers that I’ve received as either Grab Bag Sabers or Mystery Box Sabers have been the more basic sabers. The highest value saber I’ve ever gotten was a Dark Prophecy V3 as a Grab Bag Saber. The majority of the Grab Bag Sabers and Mystery Box Sabers I’ve received have been: Apprentice/Dark Apprentice V4, Initiate/Dark Initiate V4, Aeon V2/V3/V4, Dominix V2/V3/V4, Sentinel/Dark Sentinel V4.

The Grab Bag Sabers page of the Ultrasabers specifies that the Grab Bag Sabers will only be stunt sabers (no sound). Grab Bag Sabers have NO guaranteed value (in fact, I have received a ‘losing’ Grab Bag Saber that was lower in value than what I paid). Grab Bag Sabers page claims that the “lightsaber hilt selected 100% at random”. Ultrasabers does not define the process of selecting a hilt “100% at random”. Most individuals seem to receive Grab Bag Sabers valued under $100. The Grab Bag Sabers photo also features some of the more premium Ultrasabers lightsaber hilts.

If Ultrasabers wanted to, the company could compile defined odds in either a broad or specific way. A broad way would be: 90/100 sabers will be valued under $100 and 10/100 will be valued above $100. A more specific definition could be: 50/100 Apprentice or Initiate models, 30/100 Aeon/Dominix/Sentinel models, 19/100 Liberator/Standard Issue/Prophecy models, and 1/100 Graflex CE. Ultrasabers provides no odds, however.

Mystery Box Sabers are a bit different from Grab Bag Sabers, but they’re just about as opaque. The $75 Mystery Box Saber could be a stunt saber (no sound) or a sound saber, although a stunt saber is most likely. A $200 Mystery Box Saber with Guaranteed Sound guarantees a sound saber. Ultrasabers states that Mystery Box Sabers are guaranteed value of $75 for standard Mystery Box Sabers and $200 for Mystery Box Sabers with guaranteed sound. The Mystery Box Saber page specifies that he saber could be “any hilt from the arsenal”, but as with Grab Bag Sabers, does not define the odds of receiving any given lightsaber or type of lightsaber.

By omitting the odds from the Grab Bag Sabers page and the Mystery Box Sabers page, Ultrasabers allows the buyer inflate their expectations that they will receive a premium lightsaber. In theory, according to the website, you could receive a “hilt selected 100% at random” as a Grab Bag Saber or “any hilt from the arsenal”, but the buyer receives no data to back up either claim. The consumer places a lot of trust in Ultrasabers, hoping that the company follows through with the promise of sending out some nice sabers to at least some customers.

Even assuming that Ultrasabers does send out nice lightsabers every now and then, how often do they do this and what would the consumer accept as a reasonable rate? Is 1 out of 100 Mystery Box Saber or Grab Bag Saber a premium lightsaber? Is it 1 out of 1000?

We can only guess at the odds a bit by reading forum posts and watching YouTube unboxing videos for Grab Bag Sabers or Mystery Box Sabers, but basing the odds on these posts and videos would be unreliable. Only a small percentage of people who buy Grab Bag Sabers or Mystery Box Sabers share online which saber that they get. Also, it’s possible that someone could lie about receiving an amazingly nice lightsaber as a Mystery Box Saber just to get attention.

By contrast, Ultrasabers’ rival Saberforge posts their odds on their website. Saberforge Mystery Box Sabers are released in defined batches of 100, and Saberforge specifies how many of each class of lightsaber hilt are sent to Mystery Box Saber buyers. Although Saberforge does not specify the hilt name of the sabers, defining the hilt type nevertheless provides some transparency and context for the buyer.

Have you purchased an Ultrasabers Grab Bag Saber or Mystery Box Saber? How happy are you with your lightsaber?
