What are Star Wars The Black Series (TBS) Products? | Lightsabers and Beyond

Hasbro launched the Star Wars: The Black Series product line in 2013, in anticipation of the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015. The product line includes a variety of things like: action figures, vehicles, helmets, lightsabers, of course, and collectibles. If you’ve ever wondered if the Hasbro The Black Series lightsabers were related to The Black Series action figures, yeah, they’re related and they’re all made by Hasbro.

So why is The Black Series “black”? In a USA Today article, Hasbro vice president of boys marketing Derryl DePriest, explained, “[Black is] one of the main colors of Star Wars all the way back to the beginning, and it’s the approach that Lucasfilm has taken with their collector-oriented product line. We’re bringing that simplicity and essence and focus on the character now to the toy aisle.”

I would also speculate that black is kind of classy, elegant color which is fitting for higher-end products like the Star Wars: The Black Series Force FX lightsabers, which cost over $100 each. YouTube user 1Bean1 also speculates that Hasbro could have “borrowed [black] from the whiskey and alcohol industry, where the premium and more expensive drinks are part of the black label/series/lines.” If true, it’s unlikely that Hasbro, a toy company, would ever admit that their Black Series was inspired by the alcohol industry.

Either way, Hasbro likely wanted to “class up” the products a little with black branding. It is a bit strange, though, to have such a wide array of products (i.e. action figures, lightsabers, vehicles, etc.) all branded under the same The Black Series title. Hasbro is possibly trying to encourage buyers who purchase products from one category, like action figures, to crossover and purchase products from another category, like lightsabers.

How many Star Wars: The Black Series Force FX ligthsabers are there?

As of March 2021, fifteen different Star Wars: The Black Series Force FX lightsabers have been released are scheduled for release in 2021.

Hasbro will likely produce more The Black Series lightsabers in the future, but for now, buyers can choose from the seven current models.
