Single-Bladed Lightsaber

During the Old Republic era, Exar Kun, a human male, learns the ways of the Force under the guidance of Jedi Master Vodo-Siosk Baas. In 3997 BBY, Kun constructs a single-bladed lightsaber that emits a blue-white blade. The wielder may adjust the blade intensity. When set to a high intensity level, the blade may cut through the lightsaber-resistant Mandalorian ore. A series of claw-like protrusions encircle the emitter.

Double-Bladed Lightsaber

Exar Kun redesigns his lightsaber in 3996 BBY. He makes extensive modifications to the hilt, mostly notably replacing the pommel end of the hilt with a second emitter in order to form a double-bladed lightsaber. Exar Kun is sometimes erroneously referred to as the originator of the double-bladed lightsaber. In reality, Kun modeled his double-bladed lightsaber after information hidden inside an ancient Sith Holocron. Kun attaches an adjustable clip to both ends of the hilt so that he may wear the hilt on either end.

Versatile Blades

The two lightsaber blades are extremely versatile and customizable. As before, the wielder may adjust the blade intensity from low intensity to high intensity. The two blades may activate together or independently from each other (red activation studs are situated on either end of the hilt). The overhauled hilt now emits blades that are sapphire in color (a medium to dark royal blue). Additionally, the dual-phase hilt features adjustable blade length that may be calibrated from 0.5 meters to 1.5 meters long.

Now a Sith Lord, Kun imbues the double-bladed weapon with dark side energy. The Force-imbued hilt is capable of infecting Force-sensitive individuals with its dark side energy. Non-Force users, on the other hand, suffer no ill effects.

Exar Kun’s usage of a double-blade lightsaber, a rare and unfamiliar weapon to many, commonly confuses his enemies. The Sith Lord fights using Form VI of lightsaber combat, also known as Niman, the Way of the Rancor. The form is a versatile hybrid fighting style, incorporating together many elements of the preceding styles of combat.

Behind the Scenes

The Exar Kun lightsaber first appears as a single-bladed lightsaber in Star Wars Legends in the comic book Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi: Dark Lords of the Sith 1 (1994). The following year an upgraded double-bladed version first appears in Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi: The Sith Wars 3 (1995). Although many Sith lightsabers emit a red blade, the Exar Kun lightsaber emits blue blades instead.
