ALL of the Wookiee Jedi in Star Wars and Their Remarkable Lightsabers

Although Wookiee Jedi are extremely rare in Star Wars, at least 10 Wookiee Jedi are known to exist. Wookiee are tall, hairy bipeds capable of living for up to 400 years. Many of the Wookiee Jedi own intriguing lightsabers with rare and exotic features and uncommon blade colors.

Considering the heavy-wooded forest planet Kashyyyk is the homeworld of Wookiees, it’s no surprise that more than one Wookiee decide to craft their lightsaber hilt from wood! Let’s take a closer look at all of the Wookiee Jedi and the remarkable lightsabers that they wield in combat.

1. Kelnacca, The First Live-Action Wookiee!

First Appearance Disney+ Series The Acolyte (2024)

Sequel Trilogy Chewbacca actor Joonas Suotamo returns to Star Wars as Wookiee Jedi Master Kelnacca in the Disney+ Series The Acolyte. The eight-episode series is slated for release in 2024. The impending series takes place during the High Republic era, the golden age of the Jedi, around 100 years before the events of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999).

We don’t yet know many details about Kelnacca other than the fact that he’s a High Republic era Wookiee Jedi Master. When The Acolyte series debuts, Kelnacca will become the first ever live-action Wookiee Jedi in the Star Wars franchise!

2. Lowbacca and His Salvaged Parts Lightsaber

First Appearance Junior Novel Star Wars Young Jedi Knights: Heirs of the Force (1995)

The mechanically-minded Wookiee Jedi Lowbacca, nicknamed “Lowie”, is the nephew of the legendary Chewbacca in Star Wars Legends. A contemporary of Han Solo and Leia Organa Solo’s twins, Jacen Solo and Jaina Solo, Lowbacca learns the ways of Force at Luke Skywalker’s Jedi Praxeum on Yavin 4. He earns the rank of Jedi Knight serves the New Republic and the Jedi Order during the Yuuzhan Vong War.

Tech-savvy and resourceful by nature, Lowbacca constructs his bronze-bladed lightsaber using salvaged parts from a former Rebel control room on Yavin 4. The hilt is sized for Wookiee hands and emits a wide, club-like blade. A spherical enhancement jewel serves as the lightsaber crystal.

3. Tyvokka and His Wooden Curved-Hilt Lightsaber

First Appearance Comic Book Star Wars #36 (1996) (flashback)

The formidable Wookiee Jedi Tyvokka is a Rise of the Empire era Wookiee Jedi Master in Star Wars Legends. He serves on the Jedi Council until his death. Tyvokka commands a contingent of Jedi during the Stark Hyperspace War, a pre-Clone Wars skirmish against the Stark Commercial Combine. The Jedi Master is killed in battle.

Tyvokka constructs his yellow-bladed lightsaber using hardened Wroshyr-wood, a type of wood native to his homeworld Kashyyyk. The lightsaber hilt features a sleek, curved-hilt design, too!

4. Wookiee Jedi Gungi and His Wooden-Hilt Lightsaber

First Appearance Animated Series Star Wars: The Clone Wars (Season 5, Episode 6 “The Gathering”)

The lovable and patient Wookiee Jedi youngling Gungi undergoes the ritual known as the Gathering along with four fellow Jedi younglings in Star Wars Canon. During the rite of passage, each Jedi youngling harvests their kyber crystals on Illum and constructs their first lightsaber. Jedi Padawan Ahsoka Tano oversees the progress of the younglings.

Gungi finds his lightsaber crystal across a body of water on Illum. He mediates and patiently waits for the water to freeze before crossing and acquiring the crystal for his lightsaber. Jedi Master Yoda commends him for his patience.

Gungi and the other younglings construct this lightsabers under the guidance of Hyung, an architect droid professor. The pirate Hondo Ohnaka attacks the younglings due to high black market value of their kyber crystals. The younglings manage to escape and finish constructing their lightsabers. Gungi constructs his lightsaber using Brylark, a rare wood durable enough to be uses in the construction of a lightsaber.

Although the fate of Gungi and his green-bladed lightsaber is currently unknown, the Disney is teasing the return of the character in a trailer for Star Wars: The Bad Batch Season 2 (2022). He probably has quite the story to tell about surviving Palpatine’s enactment of Order 66!

5. Burryaga Agaburry and His Ancient Crossguard Lightsaber

Appears in the novel Star Wars The High Republic: Light of the Jedi (2021)

The compassionate Jedi Padawan Burryaga Agaburry serves the Jedi Order during the High Republic era in Star Wars Canon. Agaburry is the apprentice of Jedi Master Nib Assek. When Jedi Master Nib Assek takes on Agaburry as her Jedi Padawan, she learns the Wookiee language, Shyriiwook.

Burryaga Agaburry wields a blue-bladed crossguard lightsaber. The lightsaber emits a single blade and does not have side blades. A metal crossguard extends perpendicularly across the hilt near the blade emitter.

6. Kirlocca and His Yellow-Bladed Lightsaber

First Appearance Tilnes Rising adventure in the Living Force Star Wars Roleplaying Game Campaign

The skilled Wookiee Jedi Kirlocca is a Rise of the Empire era Jedi Master in Star Wars Legends. Skilled in the ways of lightsaber combat, he serves the Jedi Order as an instructor of lightsaber technique during the waning years of the Republic. He instructs many up and coming Jedi during his tenure.

Little is know about the design of the Kirlocca lightsaber, aside from the fact that the weapon emits a yellow blade.

7. Arkoff and His Green-Bladed Lightsaber

First Appearance Star Wars The High Republic: The Edge of Balance, Vol. 1 (trade paperback, manga series)

Burryaga Agaburry isn’t the only High Republic era Wookiee Jedi! Arkoff trains as a Jedi under Ravna, eventually attaining the rank of Jedi Master within the Jedi Order. Prior to the Great Hyperspace Disaster, Arkoff, along with Jedi Knight Tora-Asi and several Padawans, are stationed at the Jedi outpost on Banchii. Banchii is a remote Outer Rim Territories planet. Following the Disaster, he and his fellow Jedi assist individuals displaced by the Disaster in 232 BBY.

Honorable Mentions from Star Wars Legends

There are a couple more Wookiee Jedi, but little is known about them. Jedi Knight Vorlocca serves the Jedi Order and the Republic during the Clone Wars. He is stationed on the planet Almas where he and several other Jedi guard the Almas Sith Fortress to prevent a Sith cult from entering. In 20 BBY Chevin slaver Phylus Mon and Dark Jedi Karae Nalvas lead a raiding team. Vorlocca dies during the ensuing battle. An unidentified New Jedi Order era male Wookiee trains as a Jedi at the Jedi Temple on Ossus. The Wookiee trains as a Jedi during the Swam War in 36 ABY.

On the lighter side of things, female Wookiee Jedi Kitmum instructs a Physical Education course at Coruscant’s Jedi academy. She appears in the non-canon kids novel series Jedi Academy.

Finally, Ruhr is a Force-sensitive Wookiee who serves an ancient organization called the Je’daii Order. Ruhr is one of the appointed Temple Masters of the Je’daii Order. The Je’daii Order collapses in 25,783 BBY and becomes the Jedi Order.

What about a Wookiee Sith Lord?

As tantalizing as a “Darth Chewbacca” concept may be, sadly, no Wookiee Sith Lords or dark side Force-users are known to exist.
