The Dark Side Rey Easter Egg That Everyone Missed [Speculation]

While Disney is busy dazzling Star Wars fans with new shots of a dark-robed, gaunt-faced, Rey wielding a flashy new unfolding (yes, unfolding!) double-bladed red lightsaber, did you happen to notice the possible subtle images to the right of Dark Side Rey?

Today, the official Star Wars YouTube channel dropped Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker | D23 Special Look. The roughly 2 minute video, which is not a trailer, features clips from all 9 Star Wars movies, including glimpses of previously unreleased footage from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The Rise of Skywalker is scheduled to be released in December 2019.

Arguably, the biggest surprise of the video is a brief clip of what appears to be a ‘Dark Side’ Rey unfolding and brandishing double-bladed red lightsaber. The scene initially seems to bolster longstanding fan speculation that Rey would both turn to the dark side AND wield a double-bladed lightsaber by the conclusion of Star Wars Episode 9.

But look closer and you may see two faint, but distinct faces to the right of Rey’s lightsaber (view in 720p watch at 0.25 speed or stop the video at 1:47 for the best view). The lower face appears to possibly belong to a bearded Luke Skywalker. The top face, which is slightly larger than the bottom, is possibly Rey’s face, Luke’s face, or someone else’s face. Either way, there is likely more to the Dark Side Rey scene than meets the eye.

If the faces are real, their presence in the scene may support the theory that Dark Side Rey is merely a dream or vision of will happen to Rey if she choose a Dark Path, like Kylo Ren or Darth Vader.

Since the alleged faces are on screen only briefly and are quite faint, not all viewers may see the faces. The perceived faces may also simply be due to pareidolia (the tendency to seeing faces in inanimate objects or abstract patterns). Different screen resolutions may also affect the perception of the faces.

Do you see the faces next to Dark Side Rey? What are your thoughts on the Dark Side Rey scene in the new Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker footage?
