Future Star Wars movies WITHOUT lightsabers? (Discussion)

Lightsabers are one of the most recognizable symbols of Star Wars and have appeared onscreen in all of the theatrically-released Star Wars movies up to this point (2018). Do you think we’ll see a future Star Wars movie WITHOUT the iconic weapon of the Jedi and Sith?

Watch Future Star Wars movies WITHOUT lightsabers? (Discussion) on YouTube

Lightsabers play a much larger and more pronounced role in some Star Wars movies than they do in others. In the Skywalker saga movies (i.e. Episode I to Episode XI), lightsabers and lightsaber duels play a central role in the plot of the films. By contrast, Star Wars Anthology movies like Rogue One and Solo use lightsabers much less and in a muted, more incidental way.

The current trend is for Star Wars movies to at least feature a lightsaber in a cameo appearance. I think all of the Star Wars films will at least contain some type of passing reference to a lightsaber. Do you agree?

It would be strange to see a Star Wars movie without any reference to a lightsaber since the weapon is so strongly associated with Star Wars, both visually and aurally. Besides, from a marketing standpoint, featuring a lightsaber in a Star Wars movie, even briefly, likely boosts lightsaber toy sales.

Seeing as this is a lightsaber-themed website, I definitely have a strong bias in favor of future Star Wars movies using lightsabers. Since you’re reading an article on lightsaber-themed website, you’re likely in favor of future Star Wars movies using lightsabers, too.

There is one scenario where I wouldn’t want to see lightsaber in a Star Wars movie. I would never want to see a Star Wars movie that feels like it’s forcing or hastily adding a lightsaber into the plot. Lightsabers deserve to be more than an afterthought. In that case, dare I say, I’d rather see a Star Wars movie without lightsabers at all.

Jon Favreau’s live-action Star Wars TV series, The Mandalorian, slated for release in 2019, will likely feature lightsabers. Mandalorians in Star Wars canon have often crossed paths with Jedi and Sith characters.
